Our venue is the Seven Oaks Hotel. The hotel advises that it is booked solid but that they still are holding a very few rooms for the Nolan Clan. To book one of these rooms, you must contact the hotel directly by email or phone. State that you will be attending the Nolan Clan function to take advantage of the reduced rate of €70.00 per person sharing for B&B. A single supplement of €25.00 applies for single occupancy.

Perhaps you've seen O'Hara's beers in shops and pubs. Did you know it is brewed in County Carlow? On Friday September 13th at 2PM meet the Carlow Brewing Team at their brewery in Bagenalstown. Carlow Brewing Company is an independent Irish family owned brewery located in the heart of Ireland's historic malt-growing “Barrow Valley” region. You will of course have the opportunity to taste the special malts and smell the hops that make O’Hara’s craft beers so enjoyable.

Saturday 14 September start the day with Carlow Boat Trips

Take a boat ride on the Barrow River as it passes through Carlow for a unique insight into the history and adventures on this historic waterway. Relax inches from the waterline in a traditional Open-Boat, as life slows to a soothing pace. Hear about the real-life men and women who kept river traffic flowing. Throughout the trip, you will be completely surrounded by the unspoiled natural habitat of Ireland's second largest river and witness the wildlife that make the river Barrow their home today. The price to the boatman is €10 for kids and €15 for adults. Let us know how many are interested in this event as we need to coordinate with the boats.

Exploring History and Genealogy

After our boatride exploring the Barrow waterway and a fantastic lunch at a local pub we will visit the Carlow County Museum and the Carlow Library. At the Library we hope to have a presentation by the Carlow County genealogy experts to explain the resources and approaches one can take in researching family history.

This year we will again present awards of appreciation to Nolans who are accomplishing interesting things in the world today.
One such honoree this year is Megan Nolan, an Irish writer from Waterford, now based in London. Her writing includes essays, fiction and reviews which have been published widely including in The New York Times,The White Review, The Sunday Times, The Village Voice, The Guardian, The Irish TImes and in the literary anthology, Winter Papers. Regular columns of her cultural commentary appear in i newspaper, Huck Magazine and the New Statesman.

WHAT IS AN IRISH CLAN
From ancient times Irish society was organised around traditional kinship groups which trace their origins to larger pre-surname population groupings. Each distinct family group was led by its own Taoiseach or Chief. Under Ancient Irish (Brehon) law, leaders of Irish clans were acclaimed by their kinsmen as custodians and this system formed the basis of Irish society. Clans were composed not only of those related by blood or marriage but also by those who were adopted or fostered as well as those who joined the clan for strategic reasons and protection.

Following the Tudor re-conquest in the early 17^th century, Ireland's ancient Gaelic social structure was destroyed to be replaced by a centralised government. Despite that loss, the spirit of the Irish clans remained. At the turn of the 20^th century, the growing influence of the Gaelic League rekindled interest in Gaelic culture and prompted a cultural revival. In the 1940s Chief Herald of Ireland, Edward MacLysaght , drew up a list of Irish Clans. The first modern Irish Clans were re-formed in the latter half of the 20^th century. The Nolan Clan was reorganized in 1995 and is now recognized as one of the ancient Clans of Ireland.

One of the Nolan Clan's 2017 Appreciation Award recipients, Kevin Nolan of Nolan Farming in Grangeford County Carlow, will undoubtedly be at the Ploughing! Kevin has sent word that he will be able to join us on the 14th. We hope he can give us an inside view of the preparations for this huge event!
