New Vaping Site Not Enough

The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ commends the Ministry of Health on the creation of their ‘Vaping Facts’ website, but maintains that this is still the beginning of a long process.

ARFNZ Chief Executive Letitia O’Dwyer says that the Foundation fully supports the development of new methods of smoking cessation for those struggling to quit, but that vaping alone won’t help most people to give up smoking.

Foundation awarded Grace Gives grant

In early June, the Foundation was honoured to be among six community groups to receive a Grace Gives grant from Grace Removals. This grants programme was launched in 2016 as a way of giving back to the local communities that support Grace and their employees. More than 100,000 people voted to select the finalists this year, showing just how important this initiative is to the communities it supports.

The Foundation is extremely grateful for this support, as well as the support of everyone who voted. This grant has gone towards providing Sailor the Puffer Fish shows to primary schools in Upper Hutt.

Rotorua GPCME Conference very Successful

Our staff had a wonderful time at the recent General Practice Conference & Medical Exhibition conference in Rotorua at the end of June. It was lovely to speak to health professionals across the country on the impact and management of respiratory disease within New Zealand.

We'll see you again for round two in Christchurch this August!

Sensitive Choice - Winter Tips

Here are some tips from the Sensitive Choice NZ team to help you breathe easier this winter:
  • Make sure you have enough natural ventilation, including an extractor fan for the bathroom
  • Do a thorough clean while the weather is still good enough to air the room well during and after cleaning
  • Choose cleaning products with lower levels of VOCs or other chemicals
  • Simplify your bedding to get rid of potential dust-mite reservoirs – remove extra cushions, soft toys, pillows, or quilts that are not resistant to mould and dust mites
  • Cover your mattress, quilt and pillows with mite-resistant cases, and wash regularly in hot water
  • Wash your sheets and pillow cases weekly in hot water – don’t forget to wash your pet’s bedding too
  • Vacuum carpets and soft furnishings weekly, using a good quality vacuum cleaner (e.g. one with a HEPA filter)
  • Use high-efficiency air filters – these may be integrated in air-conditioning, heat-recovery ventilation systems, or other air purifiers.
The Sensitive Choice program is here to help people find products and services that may help reduce exposure to asthma and allergy triggers. Find out more here.
