The Friday Fives

May 31, 2019

In this edition:

A Physical Reminder

Tablecloth — A typical day off starts with my making breakfast, turning on YouTube and catching up with the latest videos from those I follow. To break that cycle, I'll be placing a tablecloth over the TV before bed this evening.

While a technological reminder could be used, I like the idea of having to remove a barrier before I chose to turn on the TV. Something about seeing that tablecloth in the morning will jolt my brain into remembering, "oh yeah, I want to read today!"

An Environmental Change

Reversing the Bean Bag — I tend to read better in front of a window with all form of distraction behind me. I had the "perfect" reading nook set up in my old apartment and I'll be doing my best to replicate that space. Fluffing up and directing the bean bag towards our living room window should help.

A Mood-setter

Rainy Day Playlist — For some reason, the sound of rain helps my mind focus on reading. Turning on a playlist featuring rain sets the mood and distracts my brain just enough to support reading and keep my mind calm. I prefer asking Alexa to "play a rain playlist" instead of using my phone and some earbuds.

Something Enjoyable

A Cup of Tea — I'll be rewarding myself and anchoring my reading habit by consuming my favorite tea as I read.

A Song

Africa by Weezer — Before I start reading I'll be playing Weezer's rendition of the song Africa. Music has been shown to increase dopamine levels in the brain which in turn improves focus and enjoyment.

Aside from those benefits, I'll be using this song as an anchor, or transition point. Over time my brain will come to associate the song with reading time and make it easier to slide into that day's book.

Parting Thought

I regret not spending more time lost in a book. As I discussed this topic with my Coach, we wondered whether there were ways to make reading more sensual.

I'll be engaging sight, hearing, smell, and taste for this experiment.

What's something in your life that would benefit from a burst of sensuality?
