After a very interesting and rewarding month, it is nice to sit down and reflect on where we are with BUMS. It is pleasing to see that the SPRUKE Festival Committee has most things in hand. We will be announcing our exciting program in the next few days, and tickets will go on sale shortly. Through May and Jun, we've treated our members to our local talent through the Sprukestar Contest, and given members three more great workshops -- baritone ukulele, bluegrass music, and strumming techniques. And there's more to come -- the bass workshop with Mark Cryle is scheduled for Coorparoo on 27 July. It promises to be a fantastic event giving attendees a good grounding on bass playing in an ensemble -- a context very appropriate to the BUMS community.
But ... workshops don’t just happen, and organisations don’t just appear.
The BUMS Management Committee puts long and hard organisational effort into making our program of activities a solid and exciting one for BUMS members.
Imagine what it would be like if you turned up to Coorparoo or Ferny Grove one Wednesday night, and there was no ukulele event ... or if you went to Toowong on Wednesday lunchtime, and no one was there. How about Northside, or the Scratch Bar, or TUTU’s or WE BUMS? BUMS staffs and funds these activities in one way or another. But for that to happen, there needs to be a strong management committee ... and at present, it looks like that ain’t gonna’ be happening next year! For your information, I have it on good authority that several of the key management committee positions will need filling for 2019-2020.
“Ah well!” I hear you say, “I’m sure someone will step forward to do this!’ To date, our inquiries amongst members have revealed no interest in this. So something’s got to give.
Please consider giving some of your time to ensure the continuation of our good fortune at BUMS. Ask the leader of your favourite jam what you can do to help at a local level. Check the management committee positions on the BUMS Inc website (https://www.brisbaneukulele.com/about/bums-inc-management/), and find a role that interests you. No prior experience required, on-the-job training provided.
