Supporting a healthy, active region.

Welcome to the June 2019 edition

Kia ora koutou,

We hope you are all staying warm and dry now that Winter is upon us.

Continuing with our focus on taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing) this term, be sure to have a go at our activity where we focus on dealing with winning and losing in a constructive way through a game called Kicking It. We also have articles around dealing with winning and losing that could be shared with parents; a collection of equipment and activity ideas for centres; as well as an update on the successful Wainuiomata dance festival that was held recently.

Have a great rest of the term!

May Lead Teachers Forum asks teachers to explore leadership
Why do people do something one way and not another – or not do it at all?  What do you do as a leader when you’re not getting the outcomes that you want?!

Teachers attending the Sport Wellington Sport Start Lead Teachers Forum earlier in the term, at Ngati Toa School considered these questions, as they practised how to listen effectively and ask quality questions to help prepare them for difficult conversations.

Taha Hinengaro (Mental and Emotional Wellbeing) – Kicking It
Taha hinengaro is about coherent thinking processes, acknowledging and expressing thoughts and feelings and responding constructively.

The focus for this activity in relation to taha hinengaro is how to be a good winner and loser. We have chosen the game ‘Kicking It’ to help practise this.

10 reasons why winning and losing are important
Winning and losing. Someone has to be a winner, and someone has to be a loser. It can be the end of the world for some kids, but for many the focus on an outcome can also discourage them from sport all together. So, how can we change a ‘winning at all cost’ perspective in children and also in parents?

Active Auckland have put together a great article on ’10 reasons why winning and losing are important’.

Talking to your young child about winning and losing
Young children don’t have the ability to express all their feelings or understand some of their emotions. They may cry and get upset, or run around the house screaming, “I won, I won.” This is just part of the learning process. Eventually, they should improve their reactions to winning and losing in different situations, but this doesn’t come without help from you!

Pathways have put together some easy tips to help your child learn how to process their feelings about winning and losing.

Equipment and activity ideas for Early Childhood Centres
‘We have all of this equipment but have no idea what to do with it’, is a sentence we often hear from educators. This equipment is often stored away unused because they are unsure of what activities could be done with it.

One idea could be to get the equipment out and just let the children explore and create their own way of using it. We have put together this document that includes common equipment found in centres and a list of activity ideas you could do with it. We hope you find this useful.

The sleeping child
For children to have their taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing) recharged each day parents and caregivers and the children need to ensure they are getting enough sleep.

Establishing a regular routine at night allows a child to know when it is time for bed and what needs to happen before the light goes out.

We have teamed up with our Child and Whānau team to share with you some ideas for night time routines, as well as including the Ministry of Health’s guidelines around sleep.

Lower Hutt Primary Schools Sports Association comings and goings
The last few weeks have seen a mix of emotions as we farewell some staff and welcome a new staff member at the Lower Hutt Primary School Sports Association (LHPSSA).

It is with sadness that we farewelled Tania Lister (Director of Sport) and Megan Bailey (Sports Convenor). We now welcome Ken Allen as the new Director of Sport for the remainder of 2019. This is what the LHPSSA Governance Group had to say:

“Tania [Lister] has done an outstanding job in her role and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours…

We'd like to thank Megan for the wonderful work she has done in this role and congratulate her on her new role as sports-co-ordinator at St Oran’s College.
Ken comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience, most recently as the Volunteer Senior Advisor at Sport Wellington.  He will be a huge asset to our team.  Ongoing support will be provided to Ken by the LHPSSA Governance Group and Zsofi Szamosi from HCC.

You will be able to reach Ken on the DoS email which is lhprimarysport@gmail.com.”
