Your PCC writes...

Last Sunday saw this year’s Behind the Badge event take place, with over 10,000 people turning out to see the displays on offer.

Throughout the day, visitors to Gwent Police HQ were treated to a number of family friendly attractions including dog displays, riot demonstrations and road traffic collision rescues, as well as access to support services and activities.

During the event, I had the pleasure of presenting Justin Johnstone with the first ever ‘OPCC Volunteer of the Year’ award for his commitment to the Independent Custody Visiting Scheme (for more information, please visit the website).

Thank you to everyone who attended.

Assembly Members and Members of Parliament Briefing

I hosted a briefing with Gwent’s AMs and MPs last week to discuss key issues affecting Gwent Police and how we are responding to them. This included the latest financial picture for Gwent Police.

The Government grant for policing has reduced in real terms by 40% in the last 9 years, and Gwent Police have made about £50 million in savings since 2008.

It was a very positive meeting and I look forward to hosting more in the future

Safe Lives Survey

SafeLives, a national charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse, have released two surveys.

The first aims to understand the attitudes men and boys have towards relationships, masculinity, gender roles and what behaviours are acceptable in a relationship, http://bit.ly/2KsPrVJ.

The second is specifically targeted at men, aged 16 or over who are survivors of domestic abuse, in order to understand the wide range of issues these survivors face, http://bit.ly/2IRyiSI.

Both surveys should take around 10-15 minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous.

Duffryn visit

I recently paid a visit to the Duffryn Community Centre in Newport to see a new youth club that has been set up by the Duffryn Community Link with funding from my office.

It was only their second event but the youth club is already extremely popular, with the children taking part in various activities including games, crafts and baking.

The project team have some fantastic work planned to engage with the local community and I look forward to seeing how they progress.

Windrush

My office was honoured to be invited by the South Wales Jamaican Alliance, Race Council Cymru and the local community to attend a special event in Cwmbran to mark Windrush Day 2019.

The event was a celebration of the contribution the Windrush generation have made, and continue to make, to society here in Wales and across the UK.

One of my key priorities for Gwent is to create a more cohesive community and it was fantastic to see diverse community or many different back grounds coming together to mark this special occasion.

Champions of Wales launch

My team attended the Champions of Wales launch last week.

Champions of Wales is a new girls’ rights movement to deliver gender equality in Wales, funded by the children’s charity ‘Plan International UK’.

They have partnered with five local organisations to support at least 200 young people (boys and girls) over a three-year period to build skills, confidence and understanding around gender equality.

Hate Crime Rise

Figures published by The Guardian last week showed that offences against gay and lesbian people have doubled since 2014, and offences against trans people have trebled,

Hate crime of any kind will not be tolerated in Gwent.

It is a despicable offence that can leave victims with physical and emotional damage for the rest of their lives.

If you experience hate crime please report it to Gwent Police.

A wide range of support is also available through the Connect Gwent victims’ hub, which offers an excellent service to victims of crime. If you need support, or know someone who does, call 0300 123 21 33.
