LITTLE ATHLETICS INCURSION
Little Athletics Australia came to school to show our junior years what Little Athletics is all about.
Principal

Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that we have only two weeks before the finish of Semester One. On Friday 28 June, parents/students will be receiving their reports and one of my most enjoyable tasks is reading and commenting on every one of these reports. Typically, they contain a large number of positive comments and many will have suggestions for improvement in some areas. I encourage families to sit down with their children to discuss and reflect on the reports, to give praise and encouragement and to seek improvement strategies where appropriate.

From the Board
BOARD COFFEE MORNING

Hello Everyone,
I can hardly believe that we are nearly at our mid-year holidays! We will again break for three (3) weeks. Once we return next term the trial of this 3 week holiday will be over and you will receive an email asking for your feedback. The Board will then review the responses and let everyone know shortly thereafter.

The School Board has a number of key accountabilities and responsibilities. However, the Board has also highlighted the following additional goals on which it will focus its efforts over the next 12 months.

Robo Cup
ROBO CUP
Quintilian STEM Club Robocup members competed at the Robocup Metro Event at Chisholm College last weekend.  Three teams took part in performance and line-following categories using Lego Mindstorm EV3 Robots. The teams were all very successful and they have their sights set on the State event coming up next term.

The day was split up into a morning workshop and a half day of competing. The adults and mentors were not allowed in the “pits” during this time so the children had to problem-solve on their own!

Lisa and Jim attended and they were very impressed with the skills and perseverance displayed by the team members. Link

Library News
Calling all Library books!

As the end of the term is drawing near, the library will not be lending books for the last two weeks.

During this time, we are asking for all our Quinnie books to be returned to the library.

Please ask your child if they have any books on loan to assist in this process.

Thank you all for your support!  Have a wonderful winter holiday!

Using their measurement and addition skills the Year 3's have calculated that 19kg 594g of batteries will saved from going into the general rubbish, instead the batteries can now be processed in a recycled way preventing any harmful chemicals from going to landfill.

Our, now emptied, battery bin is back in Quintilian's recycling station in the Year 3 area ready for any batteries that you wish us to recycle.

Scitech
Thank to everyone who battled the terrible rain and wind to come to our Biennial SciTech Night. We had a fabulous turn out with 179 Quintilian family and friends joining together for a night of science, shows and fun. It did look as if the parents were certainly having as much fun exploring as all the kids!

Principal cont'd:
Quintilian School is always a dynamic place with so much happening at any given time and I do not wish to comment on any particular person or activity that has contributed to make this semester an exciting learning experience for our students. However, I do wish to express my sincere thanks to all of our parents and friends who have supported and volunteered their services to help the school function. I appreciate and value the close and important relationship we have with you and the school could not operate effectively without your assistance.

The heart and soul of our school are certainly the students and staff who work respectfully together to achieve success. Quintilian Staff work exceptionally hard to inspire our children to develop and maintain a love of learning. Our staff want to make a difference to the life of all Quintilian students by providing the best possible educational environment for them and they always seek to encourage students to strive for their own personal best whilst at school.

This always requires the expectation of high standards of work and behaviour and I am pleased to say that our students accept these challenges. Quintilian students are very special. At a recent local Principals’ meeting I received numerous comments about the outstanding quality of our former students.

As Principal, I expect all staff to also maintain high standards in their own performance on a daily basis and they also take part in an annual performance review. They are expected to reflect on their performance, discuss matters with colleagues and keep up to date with current educational thinking and best practice. Professional learning and development also plays a large part in this process at Quintilian.

Best wishes for the remainder of term and the school holidays.

From the Board cont'd:
  1. Develop and Implement an Infrastructure Master Plan.
  2. Support the implementation of a New Administration and Learning Management System for the School including (or separate to) an innovative, fit for purpose communication platform for the school and its community.
  3. Improve Community and Board communication and interaction – staff workshops, community gatherings and student program.
Develop and implement Board Succession Planning and Induction Processes that are consistent with Board and School Strategic/Improvement Planning needs.

In addition to the key goals tabled above, the sub-committees responsible to the School Board have highlighted their own objectives including for example sustainability for events, review and monitor the current Strategic Plan and developing a link with aged care facilities and the school to give but a few.

Fitting in with these goals we held our first Community Morning Tea last week. It was a great success! More than 20 parents attended with quite a list of ideas, thoughts and volunteers for projects resulting. It was heartening to know how pleased our parents are in the governance and planning for our school and their enthusiasm for various projects moving forwards.

The parking and changes to Quintilian Rd is one of our ongoing challenges and was a popular topic with an excellent conversation held and ideas tabled. There was a resounding request for these gatherings to continue so we will do so each term and dates will be on the school calendar. The ideas from last week will be taken to our next Board meeting for discussion and inclusion into school projects.

The Quintilian Students have also asked us a range of very interesting questions - some of these and our responses are contained in this newsletter.

As mentioned, one of the many areas of accountability for the School Board is Governance. We take this role very seriously and have re-instigated a Governance Sub-Committee to address this specific accountability. As part of the school's ongoing commitment to good governance and compliance we have been reviewing our documents and policies. Although this is a long term and on-going process we have already made a good start with the amendment and introduction of various policies.

When reviewing and developing these policies it is imperative that the Board is mindful of the Quintilian Ethos of pursuing the education of the whole child. Quintilian School creates an experience that acknowledges the importance of the interrelationship of learning self-motivation, self-confidence and self-discipline; a respect and tolerance of others and to live sustainably. Every child is known, valued and cared for.

Our teachers and the school commits to nurture, guide, inspire and challenge our students - to find the joy in learning, to build their skills and understanding, and to make sense of the world. To achieve this we need to, as a community support our staff and students (our own and others). We are all at Quintilian School by choice and that gives us a unique investment in its present and future but also a responsibility to assist our staff to achieve all that we ask of them.

Improve Community and Board communication and interaction – staff workshops, community gatherings and student program.

Important in this, is to all be on the same page. The processes that are applied at the school are contained in a number of policies and guidelines.

The link below is to those that pertain particularly to our parent and student community. You may be familiar with them, or not as the case may be but we ask you at this time to remind yourself of their content as, in consultation with school leadership and staff there have been some changes. These policies also include practical information including the updated communication process with teaching staff (also enclosed in this newsletter). https://www.quintilianschool.wa.edu.au/news/policies/

Your ideas and thoughts on any topic are always welcome, feel free to contact us via email and at any time or speak with us in and around the playground.
