Two years ago, I set up what has now become the Surrey Slam Schools programme, partnering with the brilliant Surrey Slam which has brought many players back to cricket after a number of years and helped juniors make the transition to senior cricket.
Over my 15 years of coaching junior cricket in the county, I have had the pleasure of working with many clubs and visiting 100s of schools.
What I have learnt from this time is that state school cricket is still a long way behind where it could and should be and state school cricketers as a consequence are generally much less experienced than those fortunate to be privately educated.
With all the school matches, training over the summer and winter months, we reckon the difference amounts to around 100 hours a year in additional training. It's little wonder those children often dominate teams and matches.
The Surrey Slam Schools programme was set up to close that gap.
In 2019-20, we will be running 12 Borough squads of up to 20 players in each. The children in those squads will receive 17 hours of training across the off season and then play in Sunday afternoon matches after SATs against other boroughs next summer.

We are in the process of recruiting players for 2019-20, with training starting in the first full week back in the autumn term.

I am sure most of you will have players in your under 9s, 10s and 11s this year who are at state school and who would benefit from some additional coaching over the winter and some more matches in the summer. The matches are hard ball Twenty20 "out when you're out" cricket.
It would be great if you could pass on details to those players in your club so they can benefit from the programme. There is a cost, but it's run not for profit and as cheaply as we can. We have to pay venues and coaches and there is also a personalised coloured Twenty20 team shirt for every player.
Parents can sign players up online. There is also a flyer below if you would like to use that to pass on.
I hope you can help. If the last two years are anything to go by, this programme has not only improved players for them and their clubs, the talent ID sessions have also introduced many players to cricket clubs for the first time.

MANAGERS' WEEKLY CHECK LIST
- What are my games in the next 7 days?
- If none, could I arrange a friendly (see list below)?
- Have I emailed the opposition managers to confirm the fixture, venue and start time?
- If there are home games, have I confirmed the pitch is available and booked?
- If there are away game, do I have the address and postcode of the grounds as it may not be their "main" grounds?
- Do I have a team?
- Do I have a reserve in case of last minute drop outs?
- Have I told them the correct venue and meet time?
- Who is going to umpire?
- Who is going to score? Do we have a scorebook/electronic scoring device all set up ready to go?
- Do I have all the rules to hand just in case I need to refer to them?
- Do I have my equipment bag?
- Do I have a first aid kit?
- If I'm at home do I have my scoreboard, stumps & bails?
- Have I organised food & drinks for players?
- Have I correctly uploaded the results of games in the last 7 days to Play-Cricket remembering to add the number of overs bowled for both teams?
