INSPIRATIONAL STORY

Ruby's story

Recently I met Ruby Wax at the Founder’s Forum healthtech conference while I was at a panel dedicated to mental health, nicely entitled: “Mind the gap. The end of taboo - the start of facing healthcare’s great unspoken issue”.

When I arrived at this panel, I must say I was very excited to finally have the chance to talk to Michael Acton-Smith, the CEO of Calm (he is a wonderful person, as I imagined!). But very quickly during the panel, I was conquered by Ruby’s frankness, humour and pertinent comments! I quickly realised that I already had a crush on Ruby’s charity, Frazzled Cafe, which I’d met earlier during the conference (their motto is “It’s ok not being ok.”).

Her last book (How to be human: The manual) is just delightful, a must-read, and in addition all money goes to her charity. Let’s give a big round of applause for Ruby, she rocks!

PERFORMANCE-ENHANCING BACTERIA FOUND IN ELITE ATHLETES  MICROBIOME

The human gut microbiome is linked to many states of human health and disease, but their mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this study recently published in Nature, a link is identified between members of a gut bacteria (from genus Veillonella) and exercise performance. This bacteria is found in relative abundance in marathon runners, post-marathon, while it is not found in the guts of sedentary people.

 MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I am experimenting again with the Fasting Mimicking Diet- 5 days in a row with a low-calorie, low-protein diet (max 9% of daily macronutrients, and vegetal protein only). Basically is a whole food and raw plant-based diet.

The difference with what I was doing before is that in the medium term (for the next 3 months), I will keep my raw plant-based diet on a daily basis with fish and/or meat only 1-2 days a week, depending on my mood and social life :)
