Happy Fourth of July! Today as we reflect on our Declaration of Independence and the founding history of our representative democracy, let's all strive to uphold our motto E Pluribus Unum: From Many One. Integrity, courage, independence, and working together helped create our great country, and they are the keys to creating a great city as well.
On the policy front, I'm nearing the end a major update to our tree ordinance, the first in over 10 years,to help better retain and replenish our urban and suburban tree canopy.After leading the effort to pass major sidewalk legislation in 2017, I also have a bill updating that policy. Both these bills received a recommendation from the Planning Commission in June, had successful public hearings at Council in July 2, and will be on third and final reading July 16.
The remaining legislative questions as our term comes to an end are what to do about scooters and type-2, non-owner occupied, short-term-rental properties (STRPs) in residential zoning. Legislating for disruptive and metastasizing business models has been difficult for cities nationwide.
On Independence Day and every day, my independent voice, policy focus, and fiscal discipline are needed on YOUR city council. I am a representative with a principled record, and I hope I will have the privilege to serve you for four more years.

We began our fundraising efforts in late May, and by the June 30 financial reporting deadline, we had raised over $30,000 from 131 individual donors! Wow! In just the last three days, we've raised $3,000 more for a total of 144 donors. The Election Commission's next fundraising/reporting deadline is July 23rd. Please help me reach our next goal of 175 donors!

District council elections have been won or lost by a small handful of votes. Your vote matters, especially in local elections! Please look at your summer travel schedule, and make plans now for early voting.
On July 12, early voting begins at one location only: Howard Office Complex on Second Avenue South. All Early Voting Locations will open on FRIDAY, July 19 at 8:00 AM and close the following Saturday, July 27 at 4:30 PM. Belle Meade City Hall, Bellevue Community Center, and Green Hills Library are the closest early voting sites to District 34. Please vote early!

Let Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th. There is a whole day's worth of festivities happening downtown on Broadway. It's FREE, and this will be the location of the city's largest fireworks display. Please remember discharging fireworks without a permit is illegal in Davidson County. Don't create a fire and injury hazard for yourself or your neighbors. Leave the fireworks to the pros!
KEEP PETS SAFE. According to the American Kennel Club, more pets in the USA go missing during the July 4th weekend than any other time of the year. Please take extra precautions with your pets. Metro Nashville Animal Care and Control (MAAC) reports that the 4th of July is their busiest day for rescuing dogs.

EMERALD ASH BORER (EAB) EPIDEMIC DISTRICT 34 COMMUNITY MEETING. EAB is a major threat to our tree canopy, and many of our ash trees are already infected by the destructive bug. Please make plans to join me on July 10th from 7:00 - 8:00 pm at Cheekwood to learn how to save and manage or remove your ash trees.
NEIGHBORHOOD TRAFFIC CALMING PROGRAM. The new Traffic Calming program manager at Metro Public Works is taking applications for traffic calming services in all Metro areas (not applicable in satellite cities) between July 8 - July 22. This is now a bi-annual process. As a neighborhood association president and member of the Public Works Committee, I have been very critical of this program, which was for a decade ineffective and ill managed by a sub-contracting firm with questionable business ethics. I had discouraged neighborhoods in District 34 from participating until it was improved. We are getting there. We now have Traffic Calming work as a separate line-item in the capital spending plan and Metro employee managing the program. Please do not hesitate to contact me, if I can be of assistance to you with your application or answer any questions.
