UVM Campus Sustainability Newsletter
September 2019

Professor Tricia O’Kane shares her experiences as an adviser in this recent New York Times Opinion piece. Comparing student advising to taking care of birds, she says "Both groups are funny, endearing, scared, occasionally clumsy, vulnerable, daring, pesky and prone to sudden bursts of energy."  O'Kane reminds us that like the fledglings, our new students help "inspire us not to give up on this troubled world." She concludes: "I can’t wait to see what they have to teach me."  As sustainability professionals, we couldn't agree more.
SEPTEMBER 20th - DAY OF GLOBAL CLIMATE ACTION

One year ago a teenager from Sweden named Greta Thunberg started a personal school strike to demand climate action. Her story inspired countless young people all over the world to do the same. Now, school strikers are asking people of all ages to get on board with a global climate strike on September 20th. Over one million people are expected to participate.

Here on campus, the UVM Student Government Association (SGA) is hosting a Student Strike for Climate Action at 11:00 am on the Andrew Harris Commons. Their goal is to build community and have conversations about the climate crisis and campus. Meet student clubs, offices and organizations who are leading the charge for climate action, with music, food, and a collective art piece. Elsewhere in Burlington, several groups are hosting a Vermont Climate Strike Rally beginning at 12:00 noon at Burlington City Hall.

EXPANDING ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING ON CAMPUS
In June, the Vermont Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD) awarded the University of Vermont an Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) grant of over $40,000 to install three new, dual-port, Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations on its campus. The funding for this grant comes from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust.

Two stations will be installed in the Converse Lot at 75 Colchester Avenue, providing four, Level 2 connections for four publicly accessible electric vehicle parking spaces at UVM, near the UVM Medical Center. The third station has already been installed in the College Street Visitor Lot at 109 S. Prospect Street, providing two Level-2 connections for two publicly accessible spaces. According to Abby Bleything, UVM's Sustainable Transportation Coordinator, "These stations will serve the western and central portions of our campus, providing easy access to our new residential hall and largest administrative building."

UVM Natural Areas Highlight

East Woods was purchased in 1949, with the help of several private donors who recognized the potential educational value of these woods and its close proximity to the UVM campus (approximately 2.6 miles.)  Students are able to study plants and animals of a mature northern forest in this relatively undisturbed, 40-acre, mixed hardwood and conifer forest. The Potash Brook runs through the middle of East Woods which drains a 7.5 mile watershed and serves the important function of filtering and slowing stormwater while also improving water quality and habitat conditions.

Dear Sprout,
When biking, is it legal to pass cars on the right in Vermont?

The rules for passing on the right in Vermont are pretty lenient.  All you need to pass on the right is enough unobstructed pavement space for at least two vehicles to move side by side.

Basically, if you can fit your vehicle safely next to the vehicle you’re passing, without hitting something, you are legally passing on the right.

Since bicycles are considered vehicles per Vermont State law, this means that the "two vehicle" space requirement is much smaller than it would be for two cars.
