FOLK ART IN PERU &
THE ART OF COMMUNITY

March 18 - 31, 2020

LIMA - AYACUCHO - AREQUIPA - COLCA CANYON + extended tour to CUZCO & MACHU PICCHU!
The Friends of Folk Art would like to invite you to join Dr. Amy Groleau, Curator of Latin American & Caribbean Collections of the Museum of International Folk Art and Rosa Ramírez Carlson, a native Peruvian and owner of Journeys International, Inc. for an incredible Folk Art Tour of Peru! We'll visit the historic and artistic neighborhoods of Barranco and Miraflores in Lima, tour the beautiful artisan studios and workshops in Ayacucho (a major center for folk art in Peru), walk the colonial cityscapes of Arequipa and bask in the expansive views of the Colca Canyon.

Enjoy the Folk Arts and Culture of Peru!

Steeped in history, Lima's neighborhoods of Barranco and Miraflores are full of bohemians, delicious foods, and many art galleries.  Our tour of Lima will include a visit to the studio of Amapolay whose work is part of MOIFA’s exhibition and the renowned gallery Las Pallas, whose owner Mari Solari has also collaborated with MOIFA in previous exhibits.

In Arequipa, founded in 1540, we will visit the intricate embroidery at the Templo and Convento de Santa Catalina as well as valuable pieces of art and culture within the city's Cathedral.  From there, we'll explore one of the deepest, most magnificent canyons in the world at Colca Canyon with its pre-Colombian terraced fields still supporting the agriculture of the Collaguas and Cabanas people.  These pre-Inca groups live on opposite sides of the canyon and have preserved their culture, customs and art.
