Chris Way & crew 'sending it' at the Mick Hole Regatta

Mick Hole Winter One Design & Sports Boat Regatta

The Annual “Mick Hole” Winter One Design & Sports Boat Regatta was contested over the weekend.
This regatta is in memory of Mick Hole, a fierce one design competitor and friend of many at RPAYC.
Competitors went out on the water on Saturday, hoping to get some racing in before the predicted strong westerlies came in.
A first race was attempted, however RO Steve Merrington made the correct call to postpone the first race as the breeze approached 35 knots.
Competitors seeked shelter in the lee of Scotland Island.
At around midday Chris Way was sent out in the Elliott 7 to test the conditions. Some amazing videos were captured as Chris and his crew took off like a skiff under spinnaker hitting high speeds, which at this time has been viewed over 16,000 times and shared over 95 times around the world online.

Optimist World Championship Complete
The 2019 Optimist World Championship attracted 255 sailors aged 11 to 15 years from 65 nations, beating the previous record of 62 nations set at the 2017 Optimist Worlds in Thailand. Racing took place July 8-15. Club Members Daniel Links & Jono Tuite were competing as part of the Australian Optimist Team. We are pleased to report that Daniel finished in 16th overall & Jono in 203rd overall out of 260 boats from 65 countries. Daniel showed tremendous determination throughout the regatta to keep getting up off the canvas as challenges presented themselves.  The conditions were incredible but challenging with strong current and big waves,  Daniel’s 16th is the second best by an Australian ever.
Jono did it tough in the conditions as he grew to 6ft tall and 60kgs  in the 7 months since he qualified at the Nationals, but represented his club and country well as you will see from the below:
Meanwhile, one sailor from Australia earned high praise from regatta organisers for stepping forward to help out a fellow competitor who ran into difficulty at the dockside earlier in the contest.
“I saw one of the Latvian team capsize with no foils which meant he could not pull up his boat,” related Jonathan Tuite, 14.
“One of his team mates helped him get his boat upright. I noticed his foils started flying away so I retrieved them and helped him get them back on.”
Jonathan’s quick thinking and benevolent spirit is testament to the championship’s central ethos of sportsmanship and friendship, said organising committee chair Paola Vittoria.
