Don't believe the hype: The health budget may have increased by 7% on paper, but in real terms, it's barely keeping up with inflation and population growth, experts warn. (David Harrison)

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize will make his first budget speech tomorrow but how will promises match up with reality? Take a look at the economic outlook for health spending in this piece from Section27's Daniel McLaren that tells you why an increasing health budget on paper doesn't translate to more money in provinces' pockets.

And take a look at the Rural Health Advocacy Projects tips for surviving the age of austerity and what can be done about our unemployed doctors.

This week marked two years since legendary HIV activist #PrudenceMabele passed away. She helped lead the fight for antiretrovirals in South Africa. Mabele was also a traditional healer and went on to tackle a host of other issues including LGBTI rights. This was her last interview with us

Then, take a look back on her life and her light through the words of those who knew her best.
Social media is helping doctors in this country fight one of the biggest threats to global health — anti-vaxxers. (Shannon Stapleton, Reuters)
The French are known for many things, unfortunately being a bit vaccine shy is now one of them after a recent poll showed vaccine hesitancy has exploded in the country.

Here's part of the problem:  In 1990, the country botched blood transfusions that infected people with HIV. Later in 2009, the government spent nearly €1-billion on the H1N1 flu vaccine — 90% of spending went to waste.

Now amidst an outbreak of a virus more contagious than Ebola, measles anti-vaxxers are making the country sick — literally.

Mosaic Science's Alex Whiting looks at what France is doing to beat anti-vaxxers at their own game.
