 DBC Participant Profiles: Meet Imran!

✍️ Teenli Tan
Imran is the co-founder of PaperBackPackers. “We are a group that aims to develop individuals who wish to learn [more] about themselves so that they can better contribute their skills and knowledge to their team and the community."
WISE has introduced three editions of the Designing for Behaviour Change (DBC) workshops in Singapore so far. Since 2018, we’ve had more than 100 participants. Today, let’s meet DBC alumni Imran, a young Singaporean who has shown great spirit and courage in pioneering social initiatives. Full article

Following the Phnom sanitation project pilot latrine construction scheme implemented by WISE in collaboration with Neakpoan Organisation for Development (NOD), Hom Nean, the final recipient, completed her repayments on 27 January 2019. Four out of the five household recipients, including Hom Nean, were granted an 80% subsidy of US$240, while Sina, who suffers from a physical disability, was granted a full subsidy of US$300.  → Full article   .

 Faces of WISE: Ifa Karmidi

✍️ Anugraeni Yasir

Ifa found WISE on the UNV (United Nations Volunteers) online volunteering website. She decided to join because WISE works in Southeast Asia (SEA), a region where she had been living all her life but does not know very well. She saw volunteering at WISE as an opportunity to learn more about SEA.
Ifa was not aware of the WASH situation in Southeast Asia (SEA) before she joined WISE. WASH was never a topic she researched or explored, it was something she took for granted. But she believes that as an emerging global economy, SEA has not put in a lot of effort in educating communities about the importance of sanitation. → Full article   .

 WISE Happenings: June 2019

Preparations intensified in the run up to the start of the Behaviour Change Hackathon in Singapore, with a briefing and training conducted on 15 June for the facilitators who would be guiding their teams through the process of designing a behaviour change solution. Thankfully, we received the positive news that the Central Singapore Community Development Council had awarded us S$2,411.50 (US$1,775) under the Do-Good Grant, which will help us defray venue, refreshment and materials costs.

The Hackathon proper started on 22 June 2019! The first session covered how to understand and analyse problems, while the second session (on 29 June) was about how to select and craft a behaviour statement. The 30 participants have been working hard to analyse the problems presented by their project partners and identify a target behaviour that would contribute significantly and directly to the problem   .

In the midst of these activities, the team in Singapore found time to run a half-day workshop with the Animal Concerns and Research Education Society (ACRES). WISE discussed social cognitive theory and social ecological model as well as went through a 'facilitated conversation' exercise, in order to enable Wildlife Rescue Officers to more effectively educate the public to co-exist with wildlife.
