Four New Books to Improve the Way You Work

• Volume 1, Leading and Managing Archives and Manuscripts Programs, edited by Peter Gottlieb and David W. Carmicheal, provides plentiful examples of successful leadership practices from the archives field for students, aspiring and newly appointed managers, those working alone or with few staff, and veteran practitioners. 
• Volume 2, Arranging and Describing Archives and Manuscripts, by Dennis Meissner, provides a solid foundation in the history, theory, and standards supporting arrangement and description, as well as demonstrates the methods and mechanics required to process archival collections.
• Volume 3, Advocacy and Awareness for Archivists, by Kathleen D. Roe, will help you adopt an “advocacy frame of mind” and encourage you to do the work that will bring the change you seek.

• Archival Values: Essays in Honor of Mark A. Greene, edited by Christine Weideman and Mary A. Caldera, is the 2019 selection for SAA's One Book, One Profession reading initiative. In this exquisite collection of essays, twenty-three archivists from repositories across the profession examine the values that comprise SAA's Core Values statement.

• Article Exploration: Get a peek at a forthcoming American Archivist article—"To Everything There Is a Season" by Frank Boles—on August 4 at 12:00 p.m. Discussion will be led by American Archivist Editor Cal Lee. • Book Discussion: Kick off the 2019-20 "One Book, One Profession" reading initiative by talking about this year’s selection, Archival Values: Essays in Honor of Mark A. Greene, a new book edited by Christine Weideman and Mary A. SAA Foundation Awards Five Strategic Growth Grants
The SAA Foundation Board awards grants that meet the mission and goals of the Foundation and/or SAA's strategic planning priorities. Now in its fourth year of the program, the Foundation is pleased to announce the following awards:

• Develop workshops and a toolkit related to the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials, submitted by Stephen Curley, Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Archives, funded in the amount of $5,000.

• Initiate the project "Documenting Asian American Community Music Ensembles," submitted by Eric Hung, Music of Asian America Research Center, funded in the amount of $5,000.

• Implement a regional emergency response plan, submitted by Tracie Gieselman-Holthaus, Special Collections and Archives, Missouri State University, funded in the amount of $2,500.

• Write biographical Wikipedia entries about American archivists, especially women and archivists of color, submitted by April Anderson-Zorn, Illinois State University, funded in the amount of $4,134.

• Create a workbook related to the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials to assist institutions holding such materials, submitted by Liza Posas, The Autry Museum, funded in the amount of $5,000.

NHPRC Grant Proposals and Q&A Conference Call
The National Historical Publications and Records Commission Public Engagement with Historical Records grant program seeks projects that encourage public engagement with historical records, including the development of new tools that enable people to engage online. The NHPRC is looking for projects that create models and technologies that other institutions can freely adopt. NARA Seeks Public Comment on Proposed Disposition of ICE Detainee Records
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) announced that it’s in the final stages of a records scheduling process with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for schedule DAA-0567-2015-0013, Detainee Records. The schedule, which covers records related to deaths of detainees and allegations of sexual assault and abuse of detainees, received a record number of public comments when initially released in 2017. NARA has published a Notice in the Federal Register and consolidated reply to comments on Regulations.gov. The public has an additional 45 days to submit comments to NARA specifically related to items proposed for disposition on the schedule. USHRAB Grants for Increasing Access and Preserving Collections
The Utah State Historical Records Advisory Board (USHRAB) is offering grants of up to $7,500 for local governments and nonprofit cultural heritage institutions seeking funding on projects designed to increase access to and preserve historical records. Applications due August 31.

Submit to the Arline Custer Memorial Award
The Arline Custer Memorial Award recognizes the best books and articles written or compiled by individuals and institutions in the MARAC region (the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia). Submissions may be monographs, articles, popular narratives, reference works, and exhibition catalogs using archival sources. Individuals or institutions may submit two works published between July 2018 and June 2019. Deadline: July 31.

Call for Papers on Teaching, History, and Pop Culture
The Area of Education, Teaching, History and Popular Culture is accepting submissions for the 2020 Popular Culture Association National Conference, held April 15–18 in Philadelphia. Submissions should address themes of schooling and education, teaching throughout history, history, and archival studies in light of their connections to popular culture. Undergraduate presentations are encouraged. Submit proposals by November 1.

Governor’s House Library in Florida Completes Two-Year Grant Project
Governor’s House Library in St. Augustine, Florida, completed its project, Opening St. Augustine: Preserving and Providing Access to 450 Years of American History. Through a grant by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, approximately 900 maps, 1,000 design records, and 28,000 photographs collected by the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board during its operational years (1959–1997) were processed. Finding aids for each collection are available online and a selection of digitized material is available at UF Digital Collections. The team also created and edited more than 80 Wikipedia articles and added more than 200 photographs to HistoryPin and WhatWasThere.
