Here’s what’s happening in DC.

Hey, DC!

Quick announcement: we revamped our newsletter. Say hello to Fitt Weekly.

Every Thursday, we’ll send you a rundown of what’s happening in Washington, DC's health and fitness scene — handpicked by local contributors and editors, like me. From events and exclusive content to shoutouts and more, we hope you like what you see. Let’s just jump right into it.

💪 VIVA LA VIDA

Leave it to workout guru Richard Simmons to get you into one of the swankiest DC gyms for free this Friday. That’s right, VIDA Fitness is hosting a free workout class in honor of his birthday — available times vary by location. And while you’re there, why not check out membership rates? If you live in the Ballston area, we hear a new studio will be opening up in late 2019.

🥊 ONE-TWO PUNCH

Fitness studio BASH Boxing is opening up its second location in Ballston this fall. If you’ve always wanted to bob and weave but didn’t know where to start, leave it to the coaches at BASH to teach you. In every 45-minute class, you’ll start by focusing on proper form and technique before being guided through a total-body sweat sesh using aqua bags, free weights, and medicine balls. Sound like your kind of workout? You can stop by their space in Rosslyn while you wait for their new spot to open.

🚘 FRESH FOOD, FAST

This may be the best news we ever share — ever. CAVA, your go-to for fast and fresh Mediterranean eats, is now testing a drive-thru experience at its Frederick, Maryland location. Yes, that means it’s now even easier to get a bowl of greens + grains with unlimited toppings, dips, and spreads into your hands. And don’t worry, we’ll keep you posted if CAVA even hints at the idea of expanding this experience into the city.

🥗 PASS THE CHICKPEAS, PLEASE

We’re always on the lookout for the newest healthy eats, and we’ve found a winner with this one. Popular falafel spot Taïm is making its way to DC, opening its first location outside of New York City. Labeled as one of the best falafels in the world (with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options), you know we can’t wait to until it opens its doors in Georgetown this August.

🍄 SUSTAINABLE EATS

After a series of successful pop-ups, the team behind Oyster Oyster is ready to settle down and open a permanent set of doors in Shaw this August. But don’t let the name of this place fool you — sure, it references the salty ocean delicacy, but it’s also the king of mushrooms, both of which are some of the Earth’s most sustainable foods. To support this eco-friendly name, you can expect a menu full of environmentally-focused eats, like dishes of roasted root veggies and cocktails featuring kitchen scraps.

📱 There's an app for that

We’ve got some exciting news, gang. If you’ve been anxiously awaiting the moment when the Fitt DC app would be available for Android, we’re here to tell you the time has arrived. Now, finding a healthy place to eat, a new workout spot, or a hiking trail to hit up is a no-brainer. All you have to do is head to the Google Play store and download the app.

🍹 In Other News

We’re all about good-for-you food and sweaty workouts, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy all of the other events DC has going on. And, ICYMI, Smorgasburg, one of the largest weekly food markets in North America, has opened right here in DC. The OG Brooklyn location has grown in popularity so much that both LA and Japan had to join in on the fun, too. Head down to Navy Yard every Saturday from 11am-6pm for over 30 vendors serving some of the best food from in and around the DMV area. Chances are good you’ll discover your new favorite DC dish.

Speaking of new food to try, make sure you stop by tropical-themed Tiki on 18th when it opens this month in Adams Morgan. Joining a vacation-vibey trend for new restaurants (like Union Market’s Coconut Club), this oasis will be serving fresh, hand-crafted tiki cocktails alongside a menu full of Polynesian eats.
