Plantasia!
Saturday August 10th 5:30pm - 9:30pm

Experience the verdant grounds of the UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden like never before with an evening of music and art created by and for plants. Join Atlas Obscura, the UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden, and Sacred Bones Records after hours for a transformative experience combining sound, light, and the gardens' lush vegetation. Attendees are invited to explore pop-up experiences throughout the UCLA Botanical Garden's winding paths and expansive grounds before gathering in the Nest Amphitheatre for a special Plantasia listening session, introduced by celebrated composer and interactive ecology designer Mileece. Mileece will delve into the history of plant-sentience and bio-communication research before demonstrating her own invention: a botanical feedback system that generates lightscapes and organic music by transforming the bio-electric currents of plants, trees, and even people. Plants will be for sale from Folia Collective and Airplantman, along with plant health care questions answered! Botanical beverages will be crafted by Shoots & Roots BittersThis is a ticketed event. Thank you for supporting artists, organizers, and the Botanical Garden.

South African Plant Introductions

The Garden received a grant from the Saratoga Horticultural Research Endowment to evaluate new plant species for use in California horticulture. The project will focus on growing plants from specific areas within the Western Cape region of South Africa, which have soil and climate conditions similar to those in California. The goal is to identify new ornamental plants that are well adapted to our climate. We are hiring a part-time nursery research technician to work exclusively on this project. Stay tuned for updates as we begin propagating interesting and beautiful South African plants!

Invasive Shot Hole Borer Mapping

Dr. Tom Gillespie and his graduate student Monica Dimson recently published a new paper combining their expertise in geography and spatial modeling with their concern for Los Angeles trees. Check out: Using biased sampling data to model the distribution of invasive shot-hole borers in California. These modeling techniques can be helpful in reliably identifying areas vulnerable to infestation by this invasive plant pest. You can also explore the spread with this interactive map!
