 As we enter our second year of production and our greenhouse is going gangbusters, our weekly farm stand is offering an abundant selection of the flowers and produce that we grow on our organic sustainable farm.
Our farm stand, which is sporting a new look and organization, is now open Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Come out to your favorite local farm and take home some of the best strawberries you have ever tasted. We also have butter lettuces, basil, dill, zucchini, onions, eggs, flowers, and more as the season rolls along. Soon, we should have our dry-farmed tomatoes…YUMM!

New this year! We are very excited to be entering into a new partnership with our Santa Cruz Patagonia store, located at 415 River Street just a few blocks from Highway 1. We'll have a portable farm stand right outside their doors, where you can come by to hear about our mission and programs at the farm while choosing from our array of produce, eggs, and flowers. We'll be open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, July 13, 20, and 27. We are very thankful to Patagonia for this opportunity and more in the future!

Healthy Soils Program award

 Common Roots Farm was awarded $18,939 from the California Department of Food and Agriculture through its Healthy Soils Program (HSP). This program encourages farmers and ranchers to implement practices that reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases, sequester carbon in soils, and improve soil health.
“I’m very pleased that an organic urban farm like Common Roots Farm, with its mission of working with and for people with disabilities, receives this financial support to continue the wonderful work they are doing on a daily basis,” said Sacha Lozano, Program Manager for the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County.
We will use the HSP grant to apply compost on our production field and to establish a permanent hedgerow on three sides of the farm, drawing beneficial insects by creating year-round habitat using a mix of native pollinators and woody plants. The grant will also fund a riparian forest buffer along the side of our farm which is bordered by Pogonip Creek. Plants will be sourced from local native plant nurseries specializing in local, native plant propagation.
We are proud to be participating in this innovative grant opportunity that signals our commitment to ecological stewardship of our unique urban farm.

Talent blooms at Common Roots Farm

 Here at Common Roots Farm, we are fortunate to have a core group of dedicated volunteers. Among them are two of our florists, Kathy (left) and Tomoko (right). Every Tuesday and Friday, soon after we harvest flowers, these women transform their workspace into a floral workshop, creating beautiful market bouquets for our CSA and farm stand customers.
Tomoko, who met our director in an online flower production class, travels twice weekly to our farm to bring her special aesthetic to flower arranging. She also teaches others how to arrange the mix of cut flowers we produce here on our farm. Kathy began coming to the farm over a year ago with her two young children, homeschoolers, who delight us with their enthusiasm for our chickens, while their mom helps build bouquets. Kathy even got us a dehydrator and takes on drying calendula and other flowers for additional products.
We are indebted to these talented volunteers who help us throughout the season, even contributing ideas for which flowers to grow and helping tend them in the field as they get established.
Our customers tell us our bouquets last longer than store-bought flowers and we are proud to offer this quality. Thank you, Tomoko and Kathy, for making Common Roots Farm a great place to buy organically grown flowers!
