Coaching article: 3 Easy Steps to Navigation
There's nothing quite like heading off the grid for a few days of exploring in the wilderness. Some people seem to have an 'internal compass' or a natural 'mental map'. If this isn't you, don't worry! You can easily learn the skill of navigation with some practice.

Team ELM Member Highlight - Carlin Lindsay
Put your hands together for Team ELM member Carlin who rocked her Coal Town XC Classic a few weeks ago! Whoot!! Read her race report here!

"I woke up after not having the greatest sleep. I wasn’t able to eat much for breakfast and had a bit of a headache which got me feeling pretty nervous.

I did a warm up and got my legs spinning but I could feel that I wasn't feeling my best. The start was ok, but as we started to climb I wasn't feeling great. I was quick to feel too hot for what the weather was like and my headache was bothering me. I definitely wasn't able to push it on the road climb and I was just trying to not quit, i was really worried that my headache was going to get worse I would bonk before the end of the climb! There were a few ahead of me who would slow down significantly when it got steep and I would start to gain on them. That, and from what I learned from the other races and training rides so far this year I knew that there was a chance that my body would start to feel better eventually so I just kept pushing though and trying to catch those people ahead of me. On the final road climb I caught them and started ahead of them into the single track. By that time I felt the pressure in had subsided and I was feeling ok. I had some of my bar and a couple of gummies at the top of the climb and was ready to have a fun descent!

The rest of the race went really well. I felt fast on the downs and was able to give a bit on the climbs. I was focusing on my cornering and choosing the best lines. When I got to the 30km mark I was ready for the last 10km of pedaling. I felt really good, which made me wonder if I should have gone harder earlier. I ended up getting pbs on pretty much ALL the descents from the first, furtherburger, to the last one, Iron curtain. That was really surprising!! I also had ZERO calf cramping the whole race which was amazing! The last few years I've really struggled with my calf cramping on descents. I did stop and have another bite of my bar and some gummies at about 33km. I finished the race feeling like I could have done another 10km at least! I think I was 10mins or more faster than last year which was pretty good but I think I probably could have pushed myself a bit more, or gone faster had I had a better start (I was happy I stopped to eat as I felt good but I probably lost at least a couple minutes from that as well). I wish I could be just a bit faster/stronger to be able to be more competitive with the other ladies in the race but that would take another level of commitment and training I'm not sure I'd be able to do! I am proud, though, of the fitness I've gained this year and do feel I'm a different rider than I was before :)

I did meet my goal for this year to finish a marathon race feeling strong! I actually am quite confident that if I did do spakwus this year I would finish, no problem (well except for being very tired haha).

Thanks so much for your help and support to get me here this year!! Yet again you helped me reach my goal and even a bit more :) You truly are a magnificent human Sarah 💓💓 "

Well, Carlin, we think you're pretty magnificent yourself! <3
