Expertise of engineering community in new housing report

Dear <<Prefered Name>>

Welcome to the July edition of our Connect newsletter. Last week, we were delighted to welcome Fr Peter McVerry, Founder of the Peter McVerry Trust (pictured above) and other guest speakers including John Moran, Chairperson of the Land Development Agency and Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council to launch our new report, The State of Ireland 2019. The report presents actions to future-proof Ireland’s built environment, bringing together recommendations on housing, climate action and infrastructure.

The report can be read here and our press release can be accessed here. The report received widespread coverage on RTÉ Radio and TV news, Newstalk, Today FM and print media with interviews given on 26 June by our President, Marguerite Sayers (Six One News on RTÉ, click here to watch, The Hard Shoulder with Ivan Yates 30 mins in). Some pictures from our launch event are below.

Our Excellence Awards are taking place in November at the InterContinental Hotel, Dublin. The awards recognise engineering leaders and teams who have made a significant impact on society and have demonstrated exceptional engineering vision and skill through their work. I would ask you to strongly consider putting your organisation’s project work forward in our various categories this year - our 10th year celebrating excellence. One of the standout categories is Engineering Project of the Year which welcomes project entries large and small, across the full spectrum of our profession. Project of the Year entries are completed by Irish-based organisations but can be for a project undertaken in Ireland or overseas. We look forward to receiving your entries by the 18 September deadline.

Elsewhere in Connect you will read about the outreach of our membership team - which is available to all companies around Ireland, and about two brand new Affinity Schemes for members.

With best wishes

Caroline Spillane

Director General of Engineers Ireland

These company visits offer information on the benefits of membership, how to join, how to apply for professional titles such as Chartered Engineer, what counts as Continuing Professional Development and the networking opportunities within Engineers Ireland.

2019 has been a busy year to date with company visits completed with ESB, Jones Engineering Group, DPS, Kirby Group, Murphy International, John Paul Construction, Atkins and BAM Ireland to name but a few. Our membership team has been delighted to meet with, and present to, employees in these companies.

We are happy to arrange information sessions and meet our members and potential members throughout the country, face-to-face to answer any questions you may have.

These visits are an excellent way to keep up to date with events, training, awards, the chance to shape public policy and to hear about volunteer opportunities to promote the profession.

The State of Ireland: A review of housing and infrastructure

Engineers Ireland has published The State of Ireland 2019: A review of housing and infrastructure in Ireland. The report presents 100 actions to future-proof Ireland’s built environment, bringing together actions on housing, climate action and infrastructure.

We have allocated housing a ‘D’ grade – highlighting our view that the capacity, condition and connectivity of Ireland’s housing is of serious concern and requires immediate action. Our recommendations include a coordinated approach to land and infrastructure, a roadmap for retrofitting, revitalising our rural towns and villages, and promoting new technology and attractive careers in construction.

Now in its ninth year, The State of Ireland is based on the deliberations of an expert advisory group of engineers and related housing professionals, including CEOs of State bodies and Local Authorities, consulting engineers, home builders, academics, and a survey of Engineers Ireland members.

The report was launched by Fr Peter McVerry at our offices on 26 June last. The event also featured an address from Marguerite Sayers, President of Engineers Ireland – pictured above with our Director General, Caroline Spillane, and contributions from John Moran (Chairperson, Land Development Agency), Frank Curran (Chief Executive, Wicklow County Council) and Eugene Lynch (Chief Executive, McAvoy Group).

The report received strong media coverage, including RTÉ Six One News, Morning Ireland, Newstalk Hard Shoulder, Today FM Last Word, The Irish Times, Irish Examiner and Irish Independent. Engineers Ireland is now engaging with politicians, policy advisors and State agencies to campaign for the implementation of our recommendations.
