This Month at Better Relating... Happy Summer!

What: The path to inner balance is one of Self Compassion. I want to lead you there! Kindness towards yourself —> more kindness towards others = kinder world. 

Connection, Connection Everywhere

Whether it’s a trip to the beach, a day in the garden, or a hike in the mountains, summer is a time to venture outdoors with more vigour and energy. No matter where we look — the skies, the waters, and the earth — we see the abundance of life all around us. When I gaze out at the world, I see an undercurrent of connection to all things in nature and in life. 

Humans are not separate from nature. We’re not separate from each other, either! Not only are we deeply social beings, we are also tuned in and connected to that larger system, humming with energy and vitality.

To be human is to be attached — every choice we make, every reaction we have, and every interaction we facilitate involves trust and connection.  

Our earliest interactions with our family and other humans set the foundation for our beliefs around connection. As we meet new friends, partners, and lovers, we view them through the lens of those first relationships. When we look into our partner’s eyes, we have the people behind us that laid the groundwork for connection whispering in our ear. Good or bad, those early connections define our beliefs about future relationships.

Without awareness, we will repeat the patterns we learned as children, echoing those beliefs and attitudes in our inner dialogue. We will meet ourselves the same way our caregivers met us.  

When we repeat those negative patterns from childhood, we continue to feel the pain linked to this inner voice.  We continue the negative reactions — even if those reactions are neglectful or abusive. 

Luckily, if we want to change those patterns and beliefs, Self Compassion practices give us the tools to become more mindful and connected.

Surrounding Yourself With Mindful Self Compassion

Every day, I feel and express gratitude towards the Self Compassion growing within me. As I learn more, going deeper and broader, I feel myself absorbing, engaging, and embracing compassion in my life. Compassion surrounds me like a fish swimming through the water.  

Mindful Self Compassion gives us the tools to meet ourselves with empathy. When we do this our experience of life changes. By creating a strong feeling of emotional safety within ourselves, we can feel safe connecting more deeply with others.

As we are kinder to ourselves in our inner world, we slowly soften and begin to feel the ease in life. The outside world begins to change to reflect our inside world. Almost magically, we will see new choices we hadn’t noticed before — of course, those choices were always there, but hidden from our view.
