“Courage doesn't happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life.”

— Shannon L. Alder

Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to read the July issue of the Everett newsletter. We took a short break in June to focus on the quarter ending and getting everyone ready for graduation! Now that things have settled slightly we are happy to be back and update you on what we have been up to. The past month has been all about on-boarding new fellows and providing shadowing opportunities with current fellows to show the different roles they can fill. Also helping begin the transition process for graduating fellows, and implementation of student projects! This month we are taking a look at the development of the Universe of Tech project, sending off the graduating fellows with some appreciations, checking in with Nadia Raja and looking at how to engage with the concepts of self-evaluation and needs assessment.

Happy Reading!

Everett Project Shoutout!
Universe of Tech
This year, students and staff at the Everett Program are developing a web application called the Universe of Technology (UoT) that is designed to help nonprofits find the right tech solutions for their organizational needs. Our team recognizes that nonprofits rarely have the internal capacity to sort through the overwhelming amount of information online about the latest and greatest software tools available, and so our hope is that the UoT will help them make the best decisions for their own specific needs. We are officially launching the app this summer, so stay tuned! If you would like to learn more about this project and want to be a part of our initial user testing, please fill out this google form and we'll reach out to you.

Meet Everett: GRADUATING CLASS OF 2019!!!
Top from left to right: Laney, felix, Angel, Raine, Mariana
Bottom from left to right: Ai Lien, Jaedon, Katherine, Tama, Leslie
This time of year is always bittersweet here at the Everett Program. It is when we say goodbye to the graduating Fellows. It is crazy to think, this time last year we were on-boarding and introducing the program to the new cohort, and now they are preparing to move on to their next big stage in life. Each year brings its own challenges and successes, each Fellow group creates their own bond and memories, but what never changes is the deep relationships, trust, and friendships we build together. Thank you Laney, for always being available to jump on any project and bringing laughter and humor everywhere you go. Thank you felix for being there for every individual person and starting meaningful conversations where people can fully be themselves. Thank you Angel for choosing your own path and holding true to your values. Thank you Raine for bringing positivity and a sense of calm to everything you do. Thank you Mariana for your dedication and your loving and thoughtful nature. Thank you Ai Lien for your endless creativity and support for everyone. Thank you Jaedon for being a friend to everyone and always being available to talk about anything. Thank you Kat for bringing in your passions and opening us to new opportunities. Thank you Tama for always reminding us to think about systems and how to create change on a more critical level. AND last but not least, thank you Leslie for being an example to everyone how to kick a** and know your worth. We love you all and are so excited to see what comes next for you!

Alumni Spotlight
Meet Nadia Raja:

Nadia is one of our awesome alumni. She took the time to talk with us about her experience in the program and her work with connecting Palestinian students living in Israel with Palestinian students living elsewhere. She continued this work after graduation and is now an Education and Advocacy Coordinator for a Palestinian organization in the United States, specifically the Bay Area. She took us through her experience in finding jobs and being able to assess if an organization is the right fit for her and aligns with her values. As a Palestinian woman the issues she is working on directly affect her and her family. Although this work is difficult and emotional she feels it is more therapeutic to do than not to.

Tips and Tools for: Self Evaluation and Needs Assessment
Content to Consume: What is a good self-assessment and how do I do one? This question can be answered in a number of ways, but we suggest taking a look at this article, which gives a rundown of the concept of the self-assessment, what aspects to think about, and gives some additional resources to begin to gather information. By thinking about it in four sections: work-related values, interests, personality type, and aptitude, self-assessment begins to give a succinct and clear picture of who we are and what directions to move in for career or other opportunities.

Practices to Implement: One of the hardest to navigate aspects of holding a job is negotiating your worth. To help you nail a self-assessment, check out the article below for some examples and try to implement the tips they provide. Some of our favorites are:
  1. Rationalize your Results: Explain how you got your outcomes from projects and work, mention both the work that you did to specifically aid the team or project but don't forget to name and recognize the other people who worked with you.
  2. Be Specific: Avoid being overly general when answering questions, being too vague ends up making your points useless to your reader. Keep details to fully flesh out your points and help your reader understand what you're explaining in your assessment.
  3. Reflect on your mistakes: This one seems a bit counter-intuitive, but when reflecting on your mistakes you can show yourself taking responsibility for your actions and maturity to a colleague or employer.
    • Added Tip: don't just highlight what went wrong, but have a proactive plan to prevent the same issues from arising again.
