Well done to all Year 11 and 12 students for completing Semester 1! Our Year 11 ATAR students had their first taste of Senior School exams and these are always the hardest set you’ll do because it’s hard to predict what to expect. Most students will learn much from these exams and this will help them refine their exam and study techniques in preparation for Semester 2. Year 11 students not doing ATAR courses have realised that Year 11 is much harder than Year 10 and, no matter what course or certificate you’re doing, you have to work hard! Teachers are generous with their feedback so use this wisely and apply it well. Those among you who are struggling to keep up with work are encouraged to make use of people like Helen Watson (Senior School Academic Coordinator) and Kath Criddle (Career and Vocational Education Coordinator) to help plan out Semester 2.
Year 10 students have begun planning for Year 11 in 2020. There Year 10 Parent Information Evening was on Tuesday 2 July. Parents and students were invited to attend and we endeavoured to answer your questions relating to choosing courses for Year 11. Throughout the remainder of this term and into the next, teachers and Heads of Learning Areas will be talking to Year 10 students, outlining the courses they can choose, what their content is, and what prerequisites are required. This year, we have set up the PTO system to allow Year 10 parents and their child to make appointments with Kath Criddle (Program Coordinator, Careers and Vocational Education), Helen Watson (Senior School Academic Coordinator) and me to discuss options, courses and possible careers. Students are encouraged to remember that performance through not only Semester 1 but also Semester 2 will set you up for a successful Year 11. Year 10 marks are still very important, regardless of which courses you’d like to do.

City of Bayswater 2019 Scholarship
On Tuesday 7 May the City of Bayswater's Mayor Dan Bull attended the College's Assembly to present the John Forrest Secondary College 2019 Scholarship on behalf of the City of Bayswater. This scholarship was presented to Ditto Lal.
This Scholarship provides the City of Bayswater the opportunity to honour and acknowledge the outstanding achievements of a Year 11 John Forrest Secondary College student throughout the past year.
The recipient is commended for their academic performance and work ethic.
The recipient, who must reside within the City of Bayswater, received a plaque and a monetary award.

Year 10s Focus on Leadership Skills
Over three sessions during weeks 2, 3 and 4, eight selected Year 10 female students with leadership potential travelled to Bankwest Place in Perth’s CBD to participate in ABCN’s Focus Program.
Focus is a program that provides young women with essential leadership skills to engage in successful and meaningful careers. Students worked in small groups with female executives who acted as mentors to facilitate discussion and provide guidance. Read more...

Art and Culture Collide
Senior School Art students were immersed in Culture and Art at the Perth Cultural Centre and Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) on Thursday 11 April 2019.
Students explored the grounds of the Perth Cultural Centre to discover the State Library, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA), the partially constructed Perth Museum (due to open in 2020), the Blue Room Theatre, Gotham Studios, the Perth Cultural Centre Play Space and a myriad of other cultural and historic buildings and entities. Camp hits the High Notes
Term 2 started with a bang for the JFSC Senior Music Students with an intensive 3-day music rehearsal camp. Members of the Chamber Choir, Swing Band, Senior Concert Band and Senior Classical Guitar Ensemble spent approximately 20 hours rehearsing in preparation for this year's concerts and festivals. Bindjareb Pinjarra wows Drama Students
On Tuesday 7 May the Year 11 and 12 Drama students were privileged to view a special one-off performance of Bindjareb Pinjarra at the State Theatre Centre.
Bindjareb Pinjarra is an improvised comedy about the Pinjarra Massacre that occurred on 28 October 1834 and is performed by a cast of three Nyoongar and three Wadjella (whitefella) actors. Read more...

Dance Spectacular Entertains Senior Students
The Certificate II Dance students spent the evening of Friday 17 May watching Co3 Australia’s production of The Line at the State Theatre Centre.
The Line was a dance-theatre production based around the boundary line that demarcated a prohibited area in central Perth for Aboriginal people not in employment between 1927 and 1954. Read more...

On Thursday 20 June the College held its annual Mid Year Music Concert. Audiences were entertained through the evening with performances by the Junior and Senior Bands, Junior and Senior Guitar Ensembles, Jazz Band, Year 8 and 10 Choirs, Junior and Senior Electric Guitar Ensembles, Chamber Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Swing Band. Glimpsing future possibilities at Careers Expo
Friday 17 May 2019 saw Year 10 and 11 students attend the Annual Careers Expo at the Perth Convention Centre. With nearly 100 exhibitors to explore, students had the opportunity to compare a wide range of future career and employment options. Exhibitors ranged from local and interstate Universities, TAFEs, training providers, employers, government agencies and the Australian Defence Force.
Students were excited about their futures with comments like:
"I can't wait to go to Murdoch!"
"I'm moving to Adelaide to attend Le Cordon Bleu Academy!"

Outlook on a flying future
During the April School Holidays Year 12 student Irene Roda was selected to participate in the Australian Defence Force's Flight Camp at RAAF Pearce. This four-day residential camp allowed participants to experience being part of the Officer Aviation group in the Air Force. The Officer Aviation group includes roles such as Air Force Fast Jet Pilot (FJP), Fix Winged Pilot (FWP), Mission Crew, Weapon System Officer (WSO), Maritime Patrol and Response Officer (MRPO), Air Battle Managers (ABM) and Air Traffic Controller (ATC).

Year 10 Work Experience Week
In Week 7, Year 10 students at John Forrest Secondary College completed a one-week block of Work Experience as part of their Career Development Program. Students attended an array of workplaces in a variety of industries. As a result of this experience, many students secured part time employment with some receiving offers of full time apprenticeships. For other students, the experience defined career pathways and provided clarity for Senior School subject selections. Read more...

On Wednesday 22 May the Year 7 Enrichment Class participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime 2019. This annual event was run by the Australian Library and Information Association with schools and Libraries nationwide all reading the same book at the same time. Read more...

Creativity is the key for student's storybooks
During this term Year 8 Classes have been creating Picture and Story Books for the Make Your Own Story Book Competition. This is an annual event run by The Children's Book Council of Australia (WA Branch) that allows students to use their imagination to create an original and captivating story.
This year a vast range of books were created by students, with ingenious uses of drawing, collage and digital designs. Students learnt about the different features of a picture book and utilised the knowledge to create their own masterpieces.
All books have now been entered into the competition and we wish all students the best. Winners will be announced by The Children's Book Council of Australia (WA Branch) in August.

2019 Youth Civics Leadership Day
On Monday 13 May two Year 10 students, Alexandra Adams and Josie Simmonds-Lacey were invited to participate in the Youth Civics Leadership Day event at the Old Court House Law Museum as part of Law Week. To be invited students had to demonstrate leadership skills and/or civic awareness within the College and/or the community. RAC bstreetsmart 2019
On Thursday 4 April the Year 11 students attended the RAC bstreetsmart Presentation for 2019. This eye opening presentation featured a crash scene re-enactment where various emergency services attended, along with talks from emergency services personnel and those directly impacted by road trauma. Though confronting, it was a highly valuable and informative presentation for all who went.

Specialist Sports Netball Carnival
The 2019 Netball Season got off to a great start for the Year 7-9 Netball Teams during the final week of Term 1.
The first competition on the 2019 Calendar was the Specialist Sports Netball Carnival on Wednesday 10 April at Wanneroo Districts Netball Association. With teams enduring an unseasonably hot and sunny day, all teams performed well. On Wednesday 15 May the Year 11 Health Studies classes travelled to Cyril Jackson Senior Campus to view their annual Health Festival. This was an enlightening day as students observed the many stalls and activities on offer. Interschool Cross Country 2019
The Interschool Cross Country competition was held on Friday 17 May with John Forrest Secondary College sending 25 runners. With representatives in every race, it was great to see students trying their utmost against the best all day.
Ben Ridley, Edmund Ketterer, Josh Malynn and Brady Williams all finished in the top 50 for their races. A huge achievement given that some of these races have 250 runners. The 17 and over boys also finished fifth in the team competition.

Jackadder Lake is located in the suburb of Woodlands and has been subject to increasing influence from human habitation and pollution since the suburb was developed in the 1960s. Read more...

Hands on Science for Year 8's
During Term 2 the Year 8 Enrichment students have been focusing on the field of Biological Science during Science classes.
Students examined cells and organisms under the microscopes with Mrs Vale, as well as comparing and contrasting digestive systems of reptiles and human beings in groups.
On Tuesday 25 June these Biological Science studies culminated in an excursion to the Western Australian Reptile Park in Henley Brook. Read more...

Mr Burt - appointed the 15s Boys Team Manager to the School Sport WA Volleyball Team for 2019. This team will be competing in the School Sport Australia National Championships in Adelaide in August 2019. Congratulations to Mr Burt and good luck to the team.

Kade Drew - selected to represent WA in the National Intermediate League Baseball Championships in Mildura in June 2019. Kade's team finished 7th in the tournament.
Jennifer Nguyen - selected to compete in the International Dragon Dance Competition in June 2019.
Brianna and Mikayla Hyde - after successfully participating in the AFLW High Performance Academy in April this year, Brianna and Mikayla have made it to the WA AFLW 18s final squad of 34. They will be attending further competitions in June and July. Congratulations and good luck.
Aiden Nduracha - selected to compete in the National Rock Climbing competition in Sydney in May this year. Aiden had a wonderful result, finishing 3rd in the Youth B Category. Congratulations Aiden.
Ahsia Markowski and Pheonix Schicker - were both selected to the U19 Mixed State Indoor Netball Team. They traveled to the Indoor Netball Aged Nationals at Arundel on the Gold Coast from 2 to 12 of May.
Ahsia has also been invited as one of 15 girls to join the Amazons, which is the WANL Warriors U20s shadow and development team. She has also been selected to represent Wanneroo in the U15 division at the Association Championships in June.
Phoenix has been selected to represent Southern Districts in the U18 men’s division at the Association Championships. Congratulations and best wishes to you both.
Gustav McKeon - has been selected as the the Captain of the U15's Western Wolves Indoor Cricket team. The team will be representing Western Australia in the U15's Indoor Cricket at the National Championships in Melbourne in July. Congratulations and good luck.

Uniform Donations
At John Forrest Secondary College, it is our aim to have all students in full College uniform at all times. Donations of second hand uniforms assist us in doing this as we can then provide uniform to those families who are unable to access it. Our stocks of second hand uniform are currently very low, with almost no winter items available.
If you have uniform items that your child has grown out of we would appreciate if you could donate them to the College to support our endeavour to have all students in full uniform. Any donations can be delivered to the administration office or directly to Student Services.

Canteen Volunteers Wanted!
Volunteers are needed to assist in the JFSC Canteen. Our canteen is run as a non-profit service provided to the College community by the P&C and serves a varied and nutritious lunch menu, provided at low cost.
