Open Enrollment Began July 9
All students that have NOT enrolled in coverage, or submitted a waiver by August 30th (Fall) or January 17th (Spring) will be automatically enrolled in coverage and charged the full premium. More.

Fondren Library needs grad students that can take a look at LibGuides pages, and offer feedback on how to restructure them to help more grad students! July 19: Schmidt Fellowship Nominations
$100,000 fellowship for natural sciences, computing, engineering or mathematics students who have received or will receive their Ph.D. between May 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020, and who wish to do a postdoc in a different field. The nominations for this fellowship must be submitted by the university from the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS); fill out the preliminary application hereMore.
July 23: Hedgebrook Writers in Residence
Hedgebrook’s mission is to support visionary women writers whose stories and ideas shape our culture now and for generations to come. The Writers in Residence (WIR) program is Hedgebrook’s core program that for more than 30 years has supported fully-funded residencies for writers representing diversity.  More.
Aug 1: National Churchill Library and Center Graduate Research Fellowships
$7,500 grants will enable recipients to travel to special collections and archives around the globe in support of their research. For those researchers wishing to work in DC, study space is available at the NCLC. Preference will be given to projects that emphasize the relevance of Churchill’s leadership to current affairs. A review committee will award grants based on the merits and significance of the project and its relevance to the mission of the NCLC. More.
Aug 2: William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship
The fellowship, which is based on academic excellence and need, is open to both undergraduate and graduate students of color. The Hearst Fellow serves as an intern with Philanthropy and Social Innovation (PSI) in the Washington, DC office of the Aspen Institute. Through this fellowship, PSI seeks to introduce a diverse group of students to issues and challenges affecting philanthropy, social enterprise, nonprofit organizations, and other actors in the social sector.  More.
Aug 12: Simons Society of Fellows
$83,585 stipend up to three years
Founded in 2014, the Simons Society of Fellows is a community of scholars that encourages intellectual interactions across disciplines and across research centers in the New York City area. STEM senior grad students considering doing a postdoc in New York City, if you're interested and eligible please fill out this nomination application form. Only one Rice student can be nominated for this fellowship by GPS.

The Data Incubator
July 15, 2019
The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for Fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries. In response to the overwhelming interest in our earlier sessions, we will be holding another fellowship. More.

The Fall Student Activities Fair will be on August 29th from 12-3 PM in the RMC & Central Quad. Register your club by August 22 and join over 200 student clubs and campus departments with information and giveaways will be present.

NEWS


Two from Halas lab named Beckman Scholars - a Rice first
They collaborated in the same laboratory, shared an office for years and competed for the same honor. Now, Hossein Robatjazi and Dayne Swearer, who worked together as members of Naomi Halas’ research group, have each won 2019 Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowships in Chemical Sciences. They are the first Rice graduate students to win the prestigious fellowships while pursuing their Ph.D.s. Read more.
Construction near West Lot 4
On Monday July 1st through August 31st, a portion of West Lot 4, and the nearby road will be fenced off so construction can begin for Phase 1 of the new Loop Road Project. Questions: jwbuch@rice.edu.
