“Let us go forward in Christ's name as a community of faith; to grow in faith through worship, witness and love for one another and our neighbor”
— St. Anne's Mission Prayer

St. Anne's Episcopal Church is a vibrant, energetic, optimistic, fun, and loving community of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington located in Upper Montgomery County, MD. As Episcopalians we believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are descendants of and partners with the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and are part of the third largest group of Christians in the world.

We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world.

Ours is a legacy of inclusion. We aspire to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being. We believe that God loves you – no exceptions.

Listen to the Presiding Bishop's weekly podcast by clicking the image. In this weeks episode Worship - Putting God at the Center  we learn that it can sometimes be hard to worship regularly. With competing priorities, everyday stresses, and our otherwise busy lives, we might ask, “Why should I have to go somewhere else in order to worship a God who’s all around me?” In this episode, Bishop Curry teaches about how regular worship can both help us to deny self-interest as the main aim of life and also re-center our lives on God.

Traditionally in the Summer St. Anne's experiences a decline in cash flow as giving tends to decrease during this time of year. Just a reminder that St. Anne's does not have excess funds from which to draw. It is your giving that enables us to keep up our ministries and pay our salaries, mortgage and bills. Please keep your giving current. It's easy to do electronically too! Just go to our website and even if you have not signed up for a REALM account, you can enter your giving through the link on the page.

If you are a member of St. Anne's or even a regular attender, we suggest that you sign up for REALM by visiting https://onrealm.org/saintannesdamascus.
Stewardship is a year round event!  This is why we support our church.

Response by The Episcopal Church to Crisis on the Border

[July 2, 2019] Over the past several weeks, The Episcopal Church has responded to the reports of inhumane conditions for children and other asylum seekers in government custody in a number of ways. This response includes calls for donations and goods from Episcopal dioceses on the border, prayers for those seeking safety, efforts to engage in advocacy, and pastoral messages from bishops around the Church.

“We are children of the one God who is the Creator of us all,” said Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. “It is our sisters, our brothers, our siblings who are seeking protection and asylum, fleeing violence and danger to children, searching for a better life for themselves and their children. The crisis at the border is not simply a challenge of partisan politics but a test of our personal and public morality and human decency.”

The Episcopal Church, through the Office of Government Relations (OGR) and Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM), has compiled a list of resources, bishop statements, and information in response to the ongoing humanitarian situation at the southern border.

“Reports of poor care for children in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody and continued policies to limit access to asylum are extremely concerning to people of faith. We must remember these children are here because they cannot find safety anywhere else,” stated Rebecca Linder Blachly, Director of The Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations. “The U.S. has an established system to process asylum seekers, who are coming to the U.S. legally. The response to asylum seekers who are desperate and afraid should not be deterrence or detention. We have the capability to respond in a humane and compassionate manner, and I am grateful for everyone in The Episcopal Church who is responding to this crisis.”

The list of resources for education and support is available on the EMM website at https://episcopalmigrationministries.org/response-to-the-border-education-and-advocacy/  and will continue to be updated with ways to learn more and take action. The OGR and EMM webinar with Bishop Michael Hunn of the Diocese of Rio Grande will be made available on-demand through this website as well.

“The enormity of the challenge is daunting. It is easy to feel helpless to make a difference. While we cannot do everything, we can do something,” said Curry.  “The links to resources of bishops and dioceses on the border, the Office of Government Relations and Episcopal Migration Ministries offer practical suggestions for how we can each and together do something.”

The Office of Government Relations represents the policy priorities of The Episcopal Church to the U.S. government in Washington, D.C. This office aims to shape and influence policy and legislation on critical issues, highlighting the voices and experiences of Episcopalians and Anglicans globally. All of its work is grounded in the resolutions of General Convention and Executive Council, the legislative and governing bodies of the church. Connecting Episcopalians to their faith by educating, equipping and engaging them to do the work of advocacy through the Episcopal Public Policy Network (EPPN) is a key aspect of this work.

Episcopal Migration Ministries is a ministry of The Episcopal Church and is one of nine national agencies responsible for resettling refugees in the United States in partnership with the government. Episcopal Migration Ministries currently has 13 affiliate offices in 12 states. To directly support EMM and its life-changing work, visit www.episcopalmigrationministries.org/give or text ‘EMM’ to 41444 (standard messaging and data may rates apply).

Interested in the Spirituality of Aging? OR
Would you like to guide those who are aging in their spirituality?

Father Lee+, along with the clergy in the Northern Montgomery County Region and +Bishop Chilton, our Assisting Bishop, are putting together an informational session on a program called Sightlines.

As we get closer to the groundbreaking on our Affordable Senior Housing, it is important that we begin to prepare for how we will interact with our future neighbors and begin to train those who are interested in this ministry to those who are aging.

Sightlines is a project on the spirituality of aging co-sponsored by Seabury Resources for Aging and our Diocese and is designed to provide a space and structure for exploring the challenges and the rewards of aging within a spiritual context.

The project has several goals, among them, building community among older adults, fostering spiritual wellbeing, and identifying opportunities for meaning and purpose.

Sessions combine reflection, directed discussion, video and audio presentations, poetry and more to guide participants on their spiritual journey of aging.

We anticipate the information session to be held this October. The session is for ANYONE who has an interest either as a participant in the program or as someone to be trained to offer the program. It is our hope at St. Anne's that some of you, may not only wish to be participants, but that some may choose to be trained to offer this to our future neighbors in our senior housing. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Your Help Needed

We really need your help. We implemented REALM software to make management of the our church easier and it is working well. HOWEVER, most of you have not completed your and your families profiles in your REALM Account. Some of you have not signed up for your REALM account. This is making it difficult to complete new reports that I am required to submit both to the diocese and the National Church. An example is our demographic information, new reporting asks for the number of attending people in different age categories. It is impossible for me to guess....so PLEASE - if you have a REALM account, please enter the information in your profile (also attach a picture to your profile if you can) - the pictures will help all of us get to know who everyone is.

If you are a regular attendee and do not have a REALM account - please sign up for one. It really is important for us to have correct information so that we can continue to plan for our future and continue to GROW!

Look below in this newsletter for instructions on how to sign up for a REALM account.

Watch out for Ticks this Season
A public service announcement from Fr. Lee+

After a couple of weeks of generally just not feeling great - I finally know why...LYME DISEASE! I thank God that I pay attention to my body and went to the doctor. It was caught early and so with several weeks of antibiotics I should not have any long term issues. But let me tell you, it's still not fun with the achey feeling and headaches etc. My doctor did say that they have seen an increase in Lyme Disease diagnosis in our area this year - so...thought it might be good to remind everyone of the following!
  • The ticks carrying Lyme are extremely small (the smallest about the size of a sesame seed) so they are easy to go unseen.
  • Even with sprays to treat your clothing to deter ticks, they can still find their way onto you, so it's important to check yourself, especially after hiking or outdoor yard work etc.
  • Bathing or showing within two hours after an activity can help to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you.
  • You can tumble dry clothing in a dryer on hight heat for 10 minutes to kill any ticks that may be on dry clothing when you come indoors. Damp clothing may take additional time. Washing in HOT water will also kill any ticks on clothing, however warm or cold water is ineffective.

Know the symptoms!
  • First symptoms may include fever, aches, muscle stiffness, headache, and fatigue or a combination of these.
  • This is usually followed by a rash that begins small and grows larger over several days. It may or may not develop a "bulls-eye" pattern. Google pictures of lyme rashes so you know what to look for.
  • If you see a rash and are unsure, especially if you recently also had flu like symptoms, get it checked by a doctor. The sooner you begin treatment, if it is caused by Lyme Disease, the better!
