Weekly Parliamentary Diary
Net Zero Emissions by 2050

I welcome the UK Government legislating for net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and was pleased to be a co-signatory on the Bill which prompted the legislation. This week, we began an Envrionmental Audit Committee inquiry looking into what changes urgently need to take place to meet this target and how it can be reached before 2050. We began by taking evidence from the Committee on Climate Change.

It's vital we move as quickly as possible to prevent runaway climate change.
Extinction Rebellion People's Assembly

It was great to speak at Extinction Rebellion's People's Assembly event in the Senedd with Julie Morgan AM. I put forward the work that I am doing in Parliament to force the Government to take action to tackle the climate emergency. It was great to see the Welsh Government contributing to the debate and giving Extinction Rebellion the platform at the heart of Welsh Democracy.

I met with constituents who were taking part in the people's assembly about their ideas for addressing the climate emergency. I will be meeting with them again in the future to continue our discussions.
Extinction Rebellion's People's Assembly follows the recent UK Government announcement that for the first time, 6 select committees have joined together to launch a Citizen's Assembly. The aim is to help build a consensus on the policies and radical actions needed to reach the Government's Net Zero Greenhouse Gas emissions target.

You can see the full announcement here.
EurVoice Youth Question Time

Really pleased to have been on the panel of EurVoice Youth Question Time on Thursday afternoon at the Welsh Assembly. EurVoice is an outreach programme to promote principles such as education and inclusion and to create a space for pupils to discuss and learn about topical issues.

Students asked questions to the panel on lots of different topics including mental health, Brexit and the environment. It was great to see Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf represented!

Richard Ratcliffe Hunger Strike
Last week, I met Richard Ratcliffe, husband of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, whilst he continued his hunger strike at the Iranian Embassy in London. His positivity and determination was overwhelming. He was very grateful for the messages of support from Cardiff North on his 13th day of his hunger strike. We join him in urging the Iranians to release Nazanin now!
The Time is Now Mass Lobby

I supported the Cardiff North constituents who came down to London for the Time is Now mass lobby at Parliament. The turnout was fantastic which shows the strength of feeling felt by the public that action must be taken now!

MPs must now take the initiative and show leadership in producing the radical reform neccesary to restore nature and tackle the climate emergency we currently face.
Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill
Very interesting Public Bill Committee session this week on the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill where I was able to question experts on consensual divorce proceedings.

Currently, even spouses mutually seeking to end a marriage must, unless they have been living apart, assign blame and make often damaging allegations. I welcome the step-change as divorce laws are in desperate need of change and should be fit for the 21st century. I'm pleased the Bill passed committee stage.

Meeting with Cardiff and Vale Health Board

I met with Len Richards, Chief Executive of Cardiff and Vale Health Board and Abigail Harris, Executive Director of Planning where I raised a number of issues brought to me by constituents. I raised the ongoing issue of litter/cigarette butts on the outskirts of UHW and the security concerns of the Whitchurch Hospital site.

We also discussed their exciting plans for how they are reshaping their service delivery and looking to focus on more effective community care with less reliance on our overstretched emergency services.
Rhiwbina Festival

There was glorious weather for Rhiwbina Summer Festival, with a number of fantastic stalls to explore. Whilst there, I managed to speak to a number of constituents about their priorities for the local area. I was very pleased with the response to my petition on the reinstatement of free TV licences for over 75s and I look forward to representing these views in the upcoming debate in Parliament.
Oaks Garden Centre Annual BBQ

Really pleased to be invited to the Oaks Garden Centre annual BBQ this afternoon. Oaks is part of the Vision 21 social enterprise group, providing work and training opportunities for young adults with learning disabilities every week.

They grow and sell high quality, home grown hanging baskets, shrubs, plant trays and the students are supported by some very dedicated staff! A fantastic event - thank you for the inivitation!

Chief Inspector Tim Morgan

Pleased to have met the new Chief Inspector, Tim Morgan this morning, covering the Fairwater ward. South Wales Police continue to do a fantastic job serving our communities in spite of the demand profile continuing to rise, whilst the resource profile stagnates. I will continue raising this issue in Parliament to ensure South Wales Police receives the much-needed capital city funding.
Poochies Dog Grooming

A massive congratulations to Lara and her team at Poochies Dog Grooming, which officially opened for business in Whitchurch on Monday. Wishing you and the team all the best for the future!

Address: Unit 6, Codas House, Blandon Way, Whitchurch, Cardiff
Llandaff North Festival

It was great to see the variety of stalls and activities at the Llandaff North Festival on Saturday. I managed to get some delicious home bakes and some honey from The Happy Hive in Cardiff. Cadi got some treats too!
Birchgrove Primary School Summer Fayre
It was a fantastic turnout for Birchgrove Primary School's Summer Fayre. There was such a strong sense of community at the event, with fun and games for adults including Cllr Graham Hinchey's coconut toss. It was also nice to have the opportunity to meet the Head Teacher Mrs Morgan.
Stand up in the Park: Free Nazanin

This Sunday Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival and Amnesty International are hosting Stand Up in the Park in support of the campaign to free Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe

The event will take place at Open Air Theatre, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, CF11 9HW
