Don's Destination:
Halong Bay, Vietnam
|
|
It's been a long time since we visited Southeast Asia in one of my newsletters so this month we'll go there. This image is of Halong Bay, Vietnam, one of the most spectacular places on Earth. Located in northern Vietnam, Halong Bay is a UNESCO world heritage site and rightly so. Thousands of limestone karsts rise up from the sea in a stunning display of beauty. Floating villages, where locals live as one with the sea bob among the uninhabited islands and unique wildlife species of all kinds are found there. Photography possibilities are endless. I do think that everyone should see and experience Halong Bay at least once in their lifetime, and I've got some secret ways to do it right. Email me anytime for travel tips to the area.

Put People in Your Landscapes

Don's Tip of the Month:
Use People for Scale
|
|
I know some of you purists out there want landscape photos without any trace of "man". Me too - sometimes. But I also find quite often that wide-open views need a human element to make the images better. Use these tips.
- The person should be small in the frame, not the main subject.
- Offset the person in a position that leads the viewer up (or down) into the landscape part of the image.
- Crowds of people in a pristine area make it look...crowded (duh). Try to time your shot when just 1 or 2 people are in the frame.
- If you know the person you can ask them to strike a natural pose, hold up a camera or pair of binoculars or to do something a bit interesting.
- Obviously, colorful clothes catch the eye a lot better than dark or drab ones.
- In this image, Anya is overlooking Ang Tong National Park in Thailand and the two of us had the area to ourselves so there were no worries about crowds.
Image taken with a Canon 40D camera and a Tamron 18-270mm lens, handheld.

Anya's Pick of the Month:
Siberia, Russia
|
|
This image of mine, chosen by Anya for the month of July, 2019 shows a pristine view of an area near Anya's hometown in Russia. About this image Anya says "I love that the place I live now (Colorado) reminds me a bit of my home region in Russia. When Don and I visited my hometown a few years ago, my older brother took us on a camping and fishing adventure. We stopped at this view near the Altai Mountains and while my brother went fishing Don and I climbed up a nearby hillside to get this view."
