Barnet Tories curtail local democracy

Barnet council curtails local democracy

 EMERGENCY MEETING MONDAY 8 JULY
6.30pm, Greek Cypriot Centre, N12 9RU

The rights we have to address council committees about the issues we are concerned about are going to disappear. Comments at committee will be limited to one per person. Accountability is being eroded with 25 committee meetings cancelled since May last year.

A proposal to restrict democracy was approved at the Constitution and General Purposes Committee on the 25 June.  This needs to be agreed at a Full Council meeting on Tuesday 30 July 2019.

Come to the emergency meeting of all those concerned with the right of residents to raise issues in council committee meetings. The meeting will take place on Monday 8 July 6.30 pm, at the Greek Cypriot centre, Britannia Road, N12 9RU.

DEFEND THE RIGHT TO INDEPENDENT LIVING
Meeting Tuesday 9 July, 6.30pm
The Tory council is cutting the social services budget, even though it has an underspend, which has the serious risk of forcing individual disabled residents into residential care homes against their wishes.

Barnet council’s policy was challenged in the House of Lords by the crossbench disabled peer Baroness Campbell. As a result, the Government has agreed to examine the cost-cutting of home care in Barnet. Read more here.

A planning meeting of the new campaign for The Right to Live Independently will take place on Tuesday 9 July 6.30-8.30 at the Greek Cypriot Centre, 2 Britannia Road N12 9RU. ALL WELCOME.
