ANU Press newsletter: July 2019

Dear readers,

The first half of this year has been extremely busy at ANU Press with 20 titles published already and another 19 titles in production. Our titles have had over 1.1 million downloads, the most popular being The Military and Democracy in Asia and Pacific, The Personality Cult of Stalin in Soviet Posters, 1929–1590 and China’s 40 Years of Reform and Development: 1978–2018.

Our recent highlights include publishing Afterlives of Chinese Communism, which had over 4,000 downloads in the first few days of publishing; our very first book launch at the new Harry Hartog bookstore on ANU campus, which was a smashing success; and Maggie Brady’s book Teaching ‘Proper’ Drinking was shortlisted for the 2019 Chief Minister's Northern Territory History Book Award. Congratulations Maggie. This is a wonderful achievement.

Student Publishing Working Group

In August and September, ANU Press will co-present a series of four large-scale events that aim to assist early career researchers and PhD/Honours students who are looking to familiarise themselves with the process of publishing academic research. The events will feature presentations by international publishers Sage and Springer Nature, plus panel discussions with Dr Robert Mun and Prof Joanne Tomkins from the ARC Executive and keynote speaker Prof David Tscharke.

ANU Press has worked in partnership with ANU Library, Research Skills, Academic Skills, NECTAR and PARSA to present these events.

The second round of the Publication Subsidy for 2019 is now open. Applications close 31 August 2019.

China Story Yearbook: Power provides accessible analysis of the main events and trends of this year and is an essential tool for understanding China’s growing power and influence around the world.

In 2018 mainland China was, by most measures, more powerful than at any other time in its modern history and one of the most powerful countries in the world. Its economy, while facing serious challenges, including from the ongoing ‘trade war’ with the US, still ranked as the second largest in the world.

Its Belt and Road Initiative, meanwhile, continues to carve paths of influence and economic integration across several continents and, with a deft combination of policy, investment and entrepreneurship, has also turned it into a global ‘techno-power’. It aims, with a good chance of success, at becoming a global science and technology leader by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

Power surveys the various ways in which the Party-state wields its hard, soft and sharp power, both in China and abroad. Citizens of the People’s Republic of China have long had to negotiate the state’s power and influence in their lives. Increasingly, diaspora communities and non-Chinese citizens, companies and governments around the word are learning to do the same. Some submit, some push back.
