Welcome to the July edition of Golden Plains Business News. This month sees construction commencing on the Berrybank Wind Farm, and an open day for the Golden Plains Wind Farm. There’s information and opportunities around energy for businesses, information on networking events and we profile local business, Struck Accounting.

BERRYBANK WIND FARM STARTS CONSTRUCTION  

On Friday 21 June the Hon Daniel Andrews, Premier of Victoria, turned the first sod for the construction of stage one of the Berrybank Wind Farm, near Cressy in the south-west of Golden Plains Shire. 

The Berrybank Wind Farm has a permit to install 79 wind turbines, 41 of which will be in Golden Plains. The project will create 213 new jobs, and will help Victoria achieve its renewable energy target of 40 per cent renewables by 2025.

YOUNG FARMERS SCHOLARSHIPS

The State Government’s Upskill and Invest - Young Farmers Scholarships are now open to young farmers looking to access study and training, and then invest on-farm or in further professional development.

Up to $10,000 is available per scholarship – with each recipient eligible for up to $5,000 to support their training and study in areas such as business and risk management, genetics and pasture management development.

Once recipients complete their studies, they will receive further support of up to $5,000 to put their new skills into practice through professional development, business planning or to invest on-farm in equipment.

ON-FARM ENERGY GRANTS PROGRAM NOW OPEN

Farmers are now able to apply for an on-farm energy grant from Agriculture Victoria. On-farm energy grants are available to eligible primary producers until March 2020, or until funding is exhausted.

NEW ENERGY RIGHTS FOR BUSINESS

New energy protections came into force for Victorian small businesses from 1 July.

Reforms that will help businesses navigate the energy market include the best energy offer, consumer fact sheet and Victorian Default Offer.

The new consumer protections were recommended by the 2017 independent and bipartisan review of electricity and gas retail markets.

E-WASTE BAN 

The Victorian Government introduced a ban on electronic items (e-waste) in any bin or landfill on 1 July 2019. E-waste is any item with a plug, battery or cord that is no longer working or wanted. There’s a better place for e-waste than your rubbish bin. It is much better going to a participating transfer station in Rokewood, Geelong, Ballarat or Snake Valley. TRADIES NETWORKING EVENT 

On Wednesday 19 June over 35 people attended our first Tradies Networking Event at the Bannockburn Bowls Club. Representatives from the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the HIA and the Industry Capability Network, along with Council’s Investment Attraction and Business Support, Works and Procurement teams were on hand to answer questions from local businesses. Council runs a number of business networking events and workshops throughout the year. Stay tuned for details on our next business networking event in spring.

SINGLE TOUCH PAYROLL 

 

As we start the new financial year it’s important to make sure you are up to date with your reporting.  If you are a small business employer with less than 20 employees, you’ll now be required use the ATO’s Single Touch Payroll system.  

The ATO in conjunction with Golden Plains Shire Council is delivering 2 workshops in Smythesdale and Bannockburn to help understand Single Touch Payroll and the reporting requirements.  

The sessions will include an overview to understand how your payroll tax and super reporting obligations, as well as the logistics or reporting under Single Touch Payroll.

The FREE sessions will be held in Smythesdale on 20 August and Bannockburn on 27 August.

BUSINESS PROFILE: STRUCK ACCOUNTING 


Struck Accounting has been operating in Bannockburn since 2010 and moved into its current High Street address in 2015.
