Hartnell College selects new superintendent/president

Hartnell College's (MCBC member) board of trustees has selected Patricia Hsieh, president of San Diego Miramar College, as its new superintendent/president, the school announced Tuesday. Pending a contract agreement, Hsieh would replace Willard Lewallen, whose retirement is effective Sept. 30.

The Hartnell Community College District Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to pursue a contract with Hsieh.

Hsieh, president of San Diego Miramar College for 14 years, also served as president and vice president of student services at Sacramento City College. She was one of three finalists for the position who visited Hartnell June 20-21 to participate in public forums as well as interview with trustees.

At Miramar, Hsieh helped double annual enrollment of full-time students to more than 10,000, according to Hartnell College. In 2017-18, the school increased it awards of associate degrees by 32% as well as an additional 15% the following year. Read more

NPS deploys research satellite aboard SpaceX

The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey has successfully deployed a key research satellite that was on board the most recent SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The NPSAT-1 satellite is now in orbit at an altitude of 447 miles and is studying the physics of an atmospheric layer that is important to radio communications and navigation.

Students and faculty at NPS’s Space Systems Academic Group have worked on the 3-foot, 180-pound satellite for years as part of the Department of Defense’s Space Test Program mission. The Space Test Program is the DoD’s primary provider of spaceflight for its space science and technology community, a part of the Space and Missile Systems Center of the U.S. Air Force.

The primary motivation behind the building of NPSAT-1 is education. Roughly 40 theses and many hours of student and faculty research contributed to the development of the satellite.

“We are not here to build satellites, but the satellite is a nice byproduct of the educational process. We designed it, built it and have tested it in house. We also developed the lab around it, and developed the curriculum that led to its completion,” said Dr. Rudy Panholzer, a 52-year veteran of NPS and chairman of the Space Systems Academic Group. Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula earns accreditation for neurological rehabilitation

Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (MCBC member) has received a new accreditation for critical brain injury and stroke specialty programs that help patients regain many of the skills lost from brain damage. The three-year accreditation, from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities International, applies to the hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, which now provides care for neurological conditions as well as rehabilitation for other injuries and illnesses. The hospital had previously been designated a Primary Stroke Center, making Community Hospital the only hospital in the tri-county area to have both designations.

The Rehabilitation Unit helps patients adjust to life following a serious illness or injury such as stroke, spinal cord injury, cardiac care, orthopedic injury or amputation. Over an average stay of about two weeks, patients take part in three hours or more per day of intensive physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy five days a week. Read more
