The Very Revd Dr Stephen Hance, Dean of Derby, has been appointed National Lead for Evangelism and Witness for the Church of England.

The Dean informed the congregation at Derby Cathedral on Sunday, 7 July and the Church of England made the announcement on Monday, 8 July 2019.

He said: "I am a missioner at heart, passionate about growing the Church and helping people come to faith in Christ. My new role is all about enabling the Church of England to focus on these priorities, and as such it is one I had to say yes to. I will be sorry to leave Derby, but grateful for all we have accomplished here together. The Cathedral and Diocese will remain in my heart and my prayers."

Stephen will take up his new role at the end of September.

Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse - update

On Monday, 1 July, IICSA began the final series of public hearings into safeguarding within the Church of England. It has previously considered safeguarding within the Diocese of Chichester and the concerns relating to Bishop Peter Ball. It produced a series of recommendations earlier in June.

July’s hearing will focus on how the Church of England currently manages safeguarding concerns. We expect IICSA to publish a final report later this year.

The Diocese of Derby is conscious that the work of the public inquiry may trigger memories and be traumatic for some individuals. Bishop Libby would like to reassure anyone who is affected by the content of the IICSA hearing that the Diocese will take seriously any concerns or information relating to safeguarding within the Church.

Should you wish to talk to someone about this, the safeguarding team is available to work with you directly, or to signpost you to the most appropriate resource, and can be contacted on 01332 388678 or via this link

The team is available if you want to talk about any new or non-recent concern relating to any church officer or person working within the Church.

More information about IICSA can be found here and the hearings are streamed live.

Places of Worship Protective Funding Scheme

The Home Office has announced that the fourth round of the Places of Worship (POW) Protective Security Funding Scheme is open for applications until 31 August 2019. Over the first three years of the scheme more than 130 places of worship have been awarded grants to install measures such as protective alarms, security lighting and access controls.

This year’s scheme has been made easier for places of worship and associated faith community centres to apply.  Applicants no longer need to find their own quotes for security measures; instead applicants will benefit from a central supplier for assessments, quotes and installation.

The scheme is open to places of worship and associated faith community centres across England and Wales.
