One Nottingham June Board Update
A New Interim Chair AND Portfolio Holder for One Nottingham

Professor Kevin Shakesheff, of the University of Nottingham was appointed by the ON Board as the new interim Chair.

Kevin is keen to lead the partnership through a period of potential change and the development of a renewed shared vision for Nottingham. Kevin thanked the Board for his appointment and outlined his commitment to working with all of the partners around the Board table.

The Board also welcomed Cllr Rebecca Langton to the meeting as the new Nottingham City Council Portfolio Holder for One Nottingham. Councillor Angela Kandola will take over as the second City Councillor representative.

There are a number of departing members. Councillors Neghat Khan and Leslie Ayoola have both stood down from the Board, along with Sajid Mohammed and Audra Wynter, both of whom

have been elected to the City Council at the recent local government elections.

This now creates vacancies for a Voluntary Sector Faith Advocate and a Business Representative. Archdeacon Sarah Clark had previously stood down as a faith representative to become the Bishop of Jarrow.

New appointments to these positions will be made before the next Board Meeting.

The Board thanked the previous chair Jane Todd for her service and the other departing Board members.

More News from the ON Board
“Nottingham Plan” to 2050?
As we move in to a new decade the council has committed to producing a vision for a 2050 Nottingham Plan. Councillor Langton and the Council are committed to working in partnership with businesses and the voluntary sector to develop this. The ON Board and Kevin Shakesheff offered to begin work on this at the earliest opportunity, to define a route through, to agree a timescale and to begin a consideration of shared ambitions and outcomes.
Details of events and workshops will be available soon.

WE UK
The Board heard an update from WE UK and Boots who have announced Nottingham WE Day on November 5th.
Further information, news and details of how young people and schools can be involved with WE can be found at www.we.org/gb.

Cultural Compact
Stephanie Sirr informed the Board that a Nottingham bid was submitted to become a Cultural Compact City.  ON agreed to support this bid and noted how the cultural offer has to be multi–sector and contain long-term sustainable ideas. The success of the cultural industries in Nottingham is vital for the city’s success. The compact has the potential to be a major contributing initiative to the vision 2050.

Citizens Survey and Respect Survey
The Board heard the results of the latest Citizens and Respect Surveys. The overall results are positive, although there are changes from previous years. It was resolved to organise a workshop for partners to explore the research and the detail behind the headlines of these City Council and Crime and Drugs Partnership annual surveys.

Watch out for an announcement of the date and venue of this workshop.

Voluntary Sector Update
Linny Beaumont (VCS advocate) updated the Board on the latest considerations of the VCS Strategy Group which is meeting regularly. The strategy group is currently working on a “manifesto” for the VCS. The group had written to all City Council election candidates before the election. Linny explained that the VCS Strategy group will be playing a valuable role in the coming months. Councillor Langton hopes to attend the next VCS Strategy Group meeting, as the Voluntary Sector forms a significant part of her community portfolio.

Nottingham Awards
The Board agreed to open the Nottingham Awards for 2019 and, as this year is the 50th anniversary of twinning between Karlsruhe and Nottingham, they agreed that the award recipients should have contributed in some way to Nottingham’s international partnership.

See the article below for how to nominate someone for a Nottingham Award.

Windrush Day
Cecil Wright informed the Board that  Saturday June 22nd is national Windrush Day. Cecile asked for partners support for an Economic Research Council event in November to look at the impact. The Board offered its support and details of this will be made available soon.

Nottingham Young Creative Awards 2019

Rochelle Simpson (17 year old Bilborough College student) was named the Young Creative of the Year with an emotional film about knife crime.

Rochelle’s film is a dramatised film about a knife murder in Nottingham.   Rochelle was presented with the award by Nottingham actor Harry Gilby, who is fresh from his success in the movie Tolkien, in which he plays Tolkien as a young man. The night also included performances from local musicians and dancers.

The judges praised Rochelle’s film as a mature look at a very serious subject. Her technique, use of scene changes, darkness, memory and flashbacks are highly professional. She produced a memorable film for which she can be justifiably proud.

2019 has been a great year for the Young Creative Awards, all eleven categories had top quality entries from Nottingham young people.

The full list of 2019 winners is available on the YCA website www.youngcreativeawards.org , where you can also watch Rochelle Simpson’s film.

The Trustees thanks go to all those who were involved in organising the event and performing on the evening. Particular thanks go to the Robin Hood Youth Orchestra Jazz Squad who were once again the fabulous house band. The Jazz Squad is made up of Nottingham school students and is a part of the Nottingham Music Service who provide musical opportunities for thousands of Nottingham’s school children and students. www.nottinghammusichub.org.uk
Nottingham Awards 2019

Nominations are now invited for the 8th Nottingham Awards. Nominations are welcomed for people who have made a significant and lasting impact for Nottingham. This impact can have been locally, regionally or internationally.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of twinning with Karlsruhe in Germany and so to mark this anniversary we are also asking for nominations for people who have contributed to Nottingham’s international friendships, particularly our partnerships with our twin cities. People who are eligible to receive a Nottingham Award should not have already received a major award for their contribution to the city (such as an MBE or similar UK award).

The closing date for nominations to be received is Friday 16th August 2019.

The awards will be presented at an annual event at the Nottingham Council House, which marks the Goose Fair each year. The people who have been shortlisted will get the chance to take part in a memorable evening. You can view photos from last years’ awards here www.onenottingham.org.uk/nottinghamawards2018 when the recipients were Melanie Duffill - Jeffs, Alistair Conquer, James Mellors and the Kanneh-Mason family.

Please send your nominations to general@onenottingham.org.uk.  In your nomination you should include contact details for you, the nominator; the reasons why you think that the person you are nominating should receive an award; and the name and contact details of the person you are nominating, (including telephone number and email address) so that they can be contacted.

Nottingham Time to Change Employer Pledge Workshop

Thursday 8 August 2019, 9.30 pm to 11.30 pm, in the Committee Room at Nottingham City Council, Loxley House, Nottingham NG2 3NG

Mental health is an issue organisations cannot ignore
  • 1 in 4 British workers are affected by conditions like anxiety, depression and stress every year
  • Mental ill-health is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK, costing an average of £1,035 per employee per year
  • 95% of employees calling in sick with stress give a different reason.
Looking after the mental health of employees makes business sense: tackling stigma can make a real difference to sickness absence rates, staff wellbeing, productivity and retention. Since signing the Employer Pledge, 95% of employers said it had a positive impact on their organisation.

What support is there for employers considering making a pledge?

To find out more about the Employer Pledge and supporting services in Nottingham you are invited to the above workshop session that will include:
  • A presentation giving more information on the Employer Pledge
  • A question and answer session
  • Best practice from other employers
  • Examples of workplace action plans and an opportunity to start drafting your own workplace action plan.

Nick Murphy from Nottingham City Homes signs the Time to Change Employers Pledge

For more information on the Time to Change Employer Pledge email: sharan.jones@nottinghamcity.gov.

To book your place at the workshop on 8 August go to www.eventbrite.com/e/time-to-change-employer-pledge-workshop-tickets-62840031225

What is the Time to Change Employer Pledge?

When an organisation signs the Employer Pledge, they develop an action plan that demonstrates their commitment to change how people think and act about mental health in the workplace and makes sure that employees who are facing these problems feel supported.

By signing the Pledge they join a growing movement of more than 1,200 employers in England across all sectors from FTSE 100 companies and leading retailers to government departments and local authorities. Employers also benefit from the FREE, ongoing specialised support and training offered through Time to Change.
Nottingham Pride 2019

Nottingham Pride 2019 will take place this year on Saturday 27 July.

Last year, 7,000 people turned out for the city celebration, making it Nottingham’s biggest LGBTQA+ event to date.

As in previous years, the Pride march will leave from outside Marks and Spencer on the corner of Lister Gate and Castle Gate and those looking to join in are asked to gather from 10am. The route then takes revellers through the city centre to Hockley where the event will continue with live entertainment, information stalls, music and art up to 6.30pm.

Organisers are currently looking for volunteers and taking stall-holder applications.

To apply and for more information visit www.nottinghamshirepride.co.uk

Developing a Volunteer Standard for Nottingham

Led by Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service, teams of people from the voluntary, public and private sectors have been working for several months to develop a Nottingham Volunteer Strategy. Throughout the process, they have sought feedback and ideas from the people at the "sharp end" of volunteering, the leaders of volunteers and from volunteers themselves.
NCVS have now reached a point where they have drafted A Good Volunteering Standard, to promote and encourage volunteering best practice in Nottingham, and would really value your comments and those from your volunteers about this.

Please let NCVS have your thoughts about these three questions:
  • Do you think by implementing our standard that it will help your organisation to recruit and retain volunteers more effectively?
  • How will the standard support you in your role as a leader of volunteers?
  • What comments have you had from your volunteers about the standard?

Please send your replies to volunteercentre@nottinghamcvs.co.uk

The deadline for replies is 5 pm on Friday 12 July 2019.

Local Plan Consultation
Nottingham City Council is consulting on a series of draft Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) and a draft Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) between 28 June and 5pm on 9 August 2019.
The details of the documents include:
The draft SPDs, SCI and further information on how to respond is available at   www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/localplan

Consultation on Social Care Fees and Charges
Nottingham City Council is currently consulting on one of the ways they support people, by paying a contribution towards the cost of some of the services they receive. These subsidies have been provided for as long as possible, because the alternative is for citizens to pay more through increased charges.

However, they are now reaching a position where they can no longer afford to pay these subsidies and before any next steps are taken, they have decided to carry out a full consultation with the people who use these services.

The consultation launched on Monday 17 June 2019 and will run until 24 July 2019.

Letters to all affected citizens should now have been received. Throughout the duration of the consultation there will be a helpline available for citizens to contact the City Council to speak about their individual circumstances. A survey went out with the letters and is available on the engagement hub https://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/engage-nottingham-hub/open-consultations/fairer-charging/

The Council is keen to gather as many views as possible. If you speak to a citizen who has received a letter, please encourage them to call the helpline on 0115 876 4100 to find out how the changes would affect them, if the proposal is approved. No final decisions have yet been made.

Places of Worship Funding
A new Places of Worship funding scheme will be open from July 2019

Expressions of interest are now open for latest round of up to £1.6 million fund and the Home Secretary has also announced support to provide security training and advice to mosques in the run up to and during Ramadan. The increased investment and planned improvements to the scheme were originally announced in the wake of the horrific Christchurch mosque attacks which claimed the lives of 50 people.

Since its inception in 2016, the Places of Worship scheme has awarded over £1.5 million through 134 grants to places of worship from all major religions for additional protection and security measures.

The fourth year of the scheme will not only provide up to £1.6 million of funding but will also be easier than ever to apply for. Instead of applicants having to find their own costs for security work to be done, those applying after July will benefit from having a central provider for assessments, quotes and installation. This will save small and volunteer run institutions significant amounts on administration costs. This short-term funding comes alongside the £5 million grant announced by the Home Secretary in March to provide security training for places of worship for all faiths.

Details of the fund are available at:

 SSBC - Groundwork Volunteering Opportunities

Small Steps Big Changes Family Mentor Service at Groundwork Greater Nottingham is seeking volunteers. The Small Steps Big Changes programme aims to improve the outcomes of 0-3 years old children and their parents, carers and guardians at the Bulwell, Aspley, St’Ann, Hyson Green and Arboretum areas of Nottingham.

As part of the programme, they are currently recruiting volunteers to support weekly groups and activities sessions at Bulwell and Aspley to help families and children: eat well and be healthy, talk and communicate, be confident, friendly and understand emotions and behaviours. This is a fantastic opportunity for people interested in working with children and families, develop their skills, or be part of an inspiring team that aims to make a difference at Nottingham’s local community.
