On June 20, Airport Regions Conference Director General Sergi Alegre participated in a workshop organised by SENASA and focused on sustainable aviation. The workshop took place in Madrid and the participants agreed that the main steps towards sustainable aviation have to be developed by the alliance of the industry representatives and public officers.
On July 9, Ms Alexandra Covrig, Senior Projects Officer, participated in the CAMERA project workshop: A data-driven approach to mobility assessment. The purpose of this workshop was to present the results of the CAMERA Mobility Report and evaluate its methodology.

REGIONAL AND AVIATION NEWS

France plans to put an "ecotax" on nearly all airline flights starting 2020, said French Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne. The new tax could bring in some $200 million that would support modes of travel that pollute less, such as trains. The new tax will not apply to connecting flights or flights that land in France — only ones that originate in the country. Trips to Corsica and French territories overseas would also be exempt from the tax.

The 194 airports, spread across 39 airport operators, have committed to reducing COemissions under their control to zero by 2050. "At Bologna Airport, we are proud to undersign this commitment and unequivocally state our engagement. We have invested significantly in environmental management over the years," – said Nazareno Ventola, CEO of Aeroporto G. Marconi di Bologna.

Traffic continues to rise steadily across Europe’s busy skies, and the total number of movements handled across the European aviation network overseen by the Eurocontrol Network Manager hit a new high on Friday, 28 June with 37,228 flights over the course of the day. This broke the previous traffic record of 37,101 flights which was set on Friday 7 September 2018.

In the opening address of the 29th ACI Europe Annual Congress, four renowned figures reviewed the current state of the aviation industry, and investigated the measures that are needed to secure a sustainable future. Attendees and exhibitors have been promised that new strategies and progress within the field of sustainability will be revealed at the 2019 conference.

Stuttgart Airport has become the first German airport to offer free landing charges to electric aircraft and fund electricity-based fuels. The new regulations actively encourage the use of innovative technology, such as electric aircraft and alternative fuels. The use of alternative fuel will be funded by a programme with a total volume of 500,000€.

Maurici Lucena, the president of AENA, the entity that manages Spanish airports, notes that the growth of the passengers using the airport of El Prat seems infinite and the airport is in need of an expansion. However, the expansion of the airport has to be well discussed with all that are involved – Catalan Generalitat, affected municipalities and economic entities. Read the full article in Spanish.

This progressive approach to the environment is mirrored by Norway’s airports.
