We hope that the Fourth of July was a great holiday weekend for all of you! The second week of July ends with a thespian flare at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The Witch of Edmonton presented by the REV Theatre Company, who brought the Graveyard Cabaret to the cemetery in past years, will be in the limelight both Friday and Saturday, July 12 & 13 and July 19 & 20 at 8:00 pm. Bring a blanket and a picnic and come join the fun!

Queerly Departed: How a Search for LGBTQ+ Stories in Laurel Hill Led to Dinner with Oscar Wilde


At the end of June, research intern Jen Lynch asked the question "When time and historical oppression have erased queer voices, what is a researcher to do when searching for departed members of the LGBTQ+ community in Laurel Hill?" Her research first brought her to Oscar Wilde, who unlike most contemporaries of his time was open about his status as a gay man. From there, she found links back to Laurel Hill Cemetery and the literary scene in Philadelphia. Queerly Departed: How a Search for LGBTQ+ Stories in Laurel Hill Led to Dinner with Oscar Wilde was where her research led and the answer to her original question was answered.

Laurel Hill's History Podcast

The third installment of All Bones Considered podcast is now available. Dr. Joe Lex, one of Laurel's Hill's most active guests as well as the host of Dr. Joe's Grooves (which airs on PhilyCAM.org Tuesdays from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm) is the creator and narrator of the podcast. Drip Drop, You're Dead: Water as Witness
Saturday, July 27 from 10:00 AM, $15
This tour reveals a water connection to a wide range of Laurel Hill denizens. Stops will include the graves of passengers in the worst maritime disasters of the 19th and 20th centuries, student deaths at a prestigious boarding school, medical martyrs of a devastating epidemic and a family seemingly haunted by a water curse.
