Reduce your impact this Summer with the Plastic Free July Challenge!

JULY UPDATE

We’re challenging all our friends to take part in #PlasticFreeJuly this year! Can you give up disposable plastic for an entire month? This movement has grown from a handful of participants in Western Australia in 2011 to millions of participants across more than 150 countries worldwide today!

By encouraging people to be more aware of their plastic use, we can create a cleaner world, and a cleaner Durham, for generations to come. Part of this involves supporting behavior change and helping others habitually #choosetorefuse common disposable plastics such as shopping bags, straws, takeaway containers and coffee cups – just to name a few.

Durham Gardener's Advice Fair

We're excited to be participating in this year's Gardeners' Advice Fair, sponsored by the Durham Garden Forum in partnership with the Durham County Extension Master Gardeners! On Tuesday, July 16th from 6PM to 8PM at Duke Gardens, meet local gardening organizations, learn how to identify common weeds and propagate plants, attend a tree climbing demonstration by Leaf & Limb, and find out about container and straw bale gardening from the incredible Craig Lehoulier, aka the NC Tomato Man! This event is free to attend, we hope to see you there!

Become a Tree Keeper, Get Prizes!

The street trees of Durham need your help to look their best, and you could win some fabulous prizes by becoming a Keep Durham Beautiful Tree Keeper this Summer! We've expanded our Tree Keeper program to make sure the trees we've worked so hard to plant have their best chance at a long and healthy life by utilizing the OpenTreeMap app to update Durham Urban Forestry on the status of street trees and providing basic care like pruning, mulching, and staking. At the end of June, July and August, the person who has attended to the highest number of trees will receive a $25 gift card. At end of the three month period, all volunteers who have attended to at least 150 trees will receive a choice of their very own tree utility knife or pruner, and those who have attended at least 200 trees will receive a pruner holster. Best of all, those with highest number of trees attended to each month will be entered into a drawing for a 1-hour arborist consultation for their own personal yard!

For information on training and to be added to the Tree Keeper roster, please contact Dan Hickey at Daniel.Hickey@durhamnc.gov.
