The Australian Space Agency turns one!

On 1 July 2019, the Australian Space Agency celebrated its first birthday. It has been a big first year for the Agency, with achievements including releasing Advancing Space: Australian Civil Space Strategy 2019-2028, updating Australia’s space legislation, including the passage of the Space (Launches and Returns) Amendment Act 2018, releasing our brand, and signing Statements of Strategic Intent with seven companies, and Memoranda of Understandings with four space agencies, with more to come. 
We are incredibly grateful for the support from researchers, industry and the wider Australian community over the past year, and we look forward to working with you all over the upcoming years!

Agency Advisory Group announced

The Australian Space Agency Advisory Group is a non-statutory, independent, skills-based group that provides advice to the Agency Head. The purpose of the group is to review and advise the strategic direction and performance of the Agency, and to support the Agency to achieve its purpose. Eight members have been appointed for a period of up to 3 years.

50th Anniversary of the Moon landing

On Sunday 21 July 2019 AEST, it will be 50 years since humankind landed on the moon. Events are being held around Australia to celebrate this historic event - find one near you!
On Tuesday 16 July, Dr Megan Clark, Head of the Australian Space Agency will be on two ABC TV shows celebrating the anniversary. Watch Stargazing Live at 8pm, followed by the documentary Fly Me to the Moon at 9pm.

GEO Week 2019: Ideas Stage proposals open

GEO Week 2019 features a focused program of community events on 4 and 5 November, including side events and lightning talks led by members of the GEO community.

A series of lightning talks will be held on the GEO Week 2019 Ideas Stage, featuring short presentations on a variety of important topics.

Luigi G. Napolitano Award 

The Luigi G. Napolitano Award is awarded at the International Astronautical Congress every year to one young scientist (below 30 years of age) who has significantly contributed to the advancement of the Aerospace Science and gives a paper at the International Astronautical Congress on such a contribution. Applications for the award close 30 August 2019.

Australian Civil Space Strategy 2019-2028


The Australian Civil Space Strategy was released in April, and outlines the Government’s plan to transform and grow our space industry over 10 years. In our upcoming newsletters, we will highlight one of the seven National Civil Space Priority Areas that build on Australia’s areas of strength and address our challenges.

Communications technologies and services


Space is crucial for communications on land, our marine jurisdiction, and airspace. Australia can play a lead role in emerging technologies such as lasers for data communication, quantum technologies for secure communication, and hybrid radio and optical communications.
