Sustainability in the Hotel & Hospitality Sector - Planning for the Here and Now

Noel Rock frightens Hoteliers about Bathroom Toiletries
Noel Rock TD - a Fine Gael TD recently took some time out to send a scare across hotels and earn himself some free publicity.  He took a pot shot at individual toiletries before asking questions as to what hoteliers are actually doing with respect to environmental sustainability!  He already knows that there is an EU Directive on Single Use Plastics that focuses on single-use plastics so his comments were pure attention seeking.  If he had asked we would have told him what Irish Hotels are doing - some of them leading the world in their actions.  He should have been applauding their actions, not taking cheap shots.

Plastic Smart - a GREENMark
Are you serious about minimising single use plastics?  Or are you more interested in the PR message when you remove plastic straws?  We have a wide-ranging programme that addresses this scourge with the objective to eliminate single use consumer facing plastics from your business.  If you want to make a real difference join up now.  More info here  (We hope to announce our first Plastic Smart hotel member shortly)

Clean the World - A CSR Programme for Single Use Toiletries
CTW collects single use toiletries (Soaps and liquids) from hotels around the world, separates the parts , recycles the plastics and up-cycles the liquids and soaps for humanitarian uses.  This internationally recognised CSR programme was launched in Ireland by Green Hospitality and saw its first 10 members join in 2018 with up to 50 more due to join in 2019 - If you want to be a Recognised Socially Responsible hotel become a Clean the World member. More info here

What Noel Rock TD Should focus on
Noel Rock should engage with the Minister for Climate Action and Environment, Richard Bruton TD, and demand that the nationwide ban on harmful smoky coal is enacted immediately, as opposed to giving in to representations from suppliers.  Many towns in Ireland suffer from incredibly polluted air and I hear whispers of some destinations who have a smoky coal ban in place planning a winter marketing campaign featuring their clean air.   See where the ban is in place here.
