Reformers push Dems to adopt sweeping anti-corruption platform in 2020 (Politico) Fix democracy first! “As Democratic presidential candidates swear off super PACs and corporate PAC money, a campaign finance reform group is pushing them to take things a step further by using anti-corruption messages to campaign against President Donald Trump and pledging to make ethics reform an early priority in the White House.

End Citizens United, armed with polling and a track record of success in helping elect Democrats during the 2018 midterm elections, says Democrats shouldn’t hesitate to put an anti-corruption message at the forefront of the eventual general election, according to polling and presentation materials reviewed by POLITICO.”

Cuomo Signs a Bill to Allow Release of Trump’s State Tax Returns (The New York Times) It’s official. “As the battle over President Trump’s federal taxes intensifies in Washington, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York signed a bill on Monday to allow congressional committees to access the president’s state tax returns. The new law requires state tax officials to release the president’s state returns for any “specified and legitimate legislative purpose” on the request of the chair of one of three congressional committees: the House Ways and Means Committee, the Senate Finance Committee and the Joint Committee on Taxation.”

Justice Dept. Seeks to Halt Democrats’ Suit Over Trump’s Profits in Office (The New York Times) Here we go again. “The Justice Department on Monday asked a federal appeals court to issue an emergency order halting a lawsuit by congressional Democrats that alleges that President Trump has illegally profited from his family business while in office.

In a court filing, the department’s lawyers asserted that Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia had committed a series of “clear and indisputable” legal errors in allowing the lawsuit to proceed. The most glaring of them, the department said, was his decision that members of Congress had legal standing to sue the president.”

Investigation Intensifies Into Top Trump Fund-raiser (The New York Times) Mounting scrutiny. “Federal prosecutors have intensified their wide-ranging federal investigation into Elliott Broidy, a top fund-raiser for President Trump, signaling the Justice Department’s continued interest in questions about foreign influence on the administration. In recent months, federal authorities have searched Mr. Broidy’s Southern California office and subpoenaed records related to him from a onetime business partner and from Mr. Trump’s inaugural committee.“

It’s time for the D.C. Council to hold Jack Evans accountable (The Washington Post) No one should be above the law. “If all goes as scheduled, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) will ask D.C. lawmakers at Tuesday’s legislative meeting to approve a measure that would remove council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) as chairman of the Committee on Finance and Revenue. Mendelson will also offer a resolution that authorizes a law firm to conduct an investigation into allegations of conflicts of interest in Evans’s role on the council.”
