Connecting the Dots

What does a cooked chicken foot tell us about the evolution of self-control?

Hey! Sam here with the Connecting the Dots newsletter.

I've been reading The Social Leap by William von Hippel. A particular section about the evolution of self-control caught my eye.

He writes that, while self-control certainly allows us to achieve a lot in life, many of the things we're achieving now weren't goals back in the distant past.

We didn't need to avoid sugar, or go to the gym. We didn't think that far into the future. So what purpose did self-control serve?

Perhaps it was a social development—we had to stop ourselves from saying what we actually thought.

Some Other Interesting Stuff

1. A new report suggests AI created 3 times more jobs than it took away in 2018... but how long will that keep up?

2. More people are avoiding the news. For the most part, it's because the news is negative and stresses people out. But also because people don't rely on it being true.

3. Cybersecurity is a growing concern. A rogue code dubbed Triton was called the “world’s most murderous malware” by MIT Tech Review
