The SIA has bought a table to support one of the finalists in the Women in Defence Awards, the winners of which will be announced at a Gala Dinner on Thursday 11 July 2019 at the National Arboretum in Canberra. It turns out that Errika Meades is one of the finalists in the Project Management category.

The finalist in question is Errika Meades who has been a valued member of the Committee for two years now.  On her own initiative, she has taken on the role of championing and leading the SIA's support of getting the message  about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) to the youth of this country and you would have seen a recent post in social media (if you follow the SIA's Facebook page) about our support of Year 6 students from Trinity Gardens Primary School in Adelaide as they participate in the Subs in Schools program.

Subject: Fwd: Why women make better assassins
 Whoa!
The CIA had an opening for an assassin. After all the background checks, interviews and testing were done, there were three finalists: two men and a woman. For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun.  "We must know that you will follow your instructions no matter what the circumstances. Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in a chair.  Kill her."
The man said "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife".
The agent said, "Then you are not the right man for this job. Take your wife and go home".
The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about five minutes. The man came out with tears in his eyes, "I tried, but I can't kill my wife."
The agent said, "You don't have what it takes, so take your wife and go home."
Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same instructions to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard one after another.  They heard screaming, crashing, and banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping sweat from her brow.
“The gun was loaded with blanks" she said. "I had to kill him with the chair”

OUR FLAG

Our flag wears the stars that blaze at night,
In our Southern skies of blue,
And a little old flag in the corner,
That`s part of our heritage too.

It`s for the English, the Scots and the Irish,
Who were sent to the ends of the earth,
The rogues and schemers, the doers and dreamers,
Who gave modern Australia its birth.

And you, who are shouting to change it,
You don`t seem to understand,
It`s the flag of our laws and our language,
Not the flag of a faraway land.

Though there are plenty of people who`ll tell you,
How when Europe was plunged into night,
That little old flag in the corner,
Was their symbol of freedom and light.

It doesn`t mean we owe allegiance,
To a forgotten imperial dream,
We`ve the stars to show where we`re going,
And old flag to show where we`ve been.

It`s only an old piece of bunting,
It`s only an old piece of rag,
But there are thousands who`ve died for its honour,
And shed of their blood for OUR FLAG.

Today, the explanation is modern...
The son asks his father: - Dad, how was I born?
Well, my son, one day we knew we would talk about it,

One day, Mom and Dad connected to facebook and became friends.
Dad sent a tweet inviting Mum to go to a cybercafé.
We found that we had many links and likes in common

Dad introduced his USB stick to Mum's USB port.

When the files were downloaded,
we realised that we had forgotten the security software

Very chauvinistic!!!!!!!!!!!
An old hillbilly farmer had a wife who nagged him without mercy.  From morning 'til night (and sometimes later), she was always complaining about something.
The only time he got any relief was when he was out plowing with his old mule.  He tried to plow a lot.
One day, when he was out plowing, his wife brought him lunch in the field.  He drove the old mule into the shade, sat down on a stump, and began to eat his lunch.
Immediately, his wife began pestering him.  Complain, nag, nag, it just went on and on.
All of a sudden, the old mule lashed out with both hind feet; caught her smack in the back of the head and killed her dead on the spot.
At the funeral several days later, the minister noticed something rather odd.  When a woman mourner would approach the old farmer, he would listen for a minute, then nod his head in agreement; but when a man mourner approached him, he would listen for a minute, then shake his head in disagreement.
This was so consistent, the minister decided to ask the old farmer about it.  So after the funeral, the minister spoke to the old farmer, and asked him  why he nodded his head and agreed with the women, but always shook his head and disagreed with all the men.
The old farmer said,
Well, the women would come up and say something about
how nice my wife looked, or how pretty her dress was, so I'd nod my head in agreement.

And what about the men? the minister asked.

They wanted to know if the mule was for sale.

DVA MATTERS

Received from John Polglaze in with conjunction with Ray Kemp OAM

No. 6,

Hi. As you may recall, Ray Kemp and I ran a survey to gather data on the experience of sinus barotraumas by Australian submariners as a precursor to getting better recognition of this condition by DVA. Unfortunately, we have not had any success with this, so we should like to communicate this to the wider SM community, while also thanking all those who contributed to the survey. Accordingly, I have crafted a few words (below) that I ask you include in your next edition of Up Periscope

Cheers,

John

It is with deep disappointment that we must report that our submission to the DVA to have the common incidence of sinus barotrauma recognised as a standard affliction for submariners was unsuccessful. In a display of somewhat tortured logic, the proposition was rejected essentially on the basis that because there were no medical records available then the Department could not determine whether or not we submariners actually experienced sinus barotrauma – the whole basis of our submission was exactly because there were no medical records! Furthermore, even if we had experienced sinus barotrauma and DVA conceded this, DVA advised that it would not amount to anything because we would also need medical records, typically generated within 48 hours of sinus barotrauma onset, to satisfy the Department that other afflictions resulting from sinus barotrauma were related to service. The underlying fact that the Commonwealth provided no means for a submariner to have any medical diagnoses undertaken or medical records generated at sea was seemingly lost on DVA, which is a convenient outcome for DVA but not for submariners.

In a small concession, DVA advised that:
….. one of the possible avenues now being considered for future expansion of the streamlined/straight through processing policy approach to claims determination is whether it is possible to streamline conditions based on the nature of a member’s ADF employment. Should such an approach prove viable, it is likely that sinus barotrauma and otitic barotrauma would be the type of condition which, due to the nature of their service, would be commonly encountered among submariners. Consequently, these conditions will be examined for inclusion in a future expansion of straight through processing along employment category lines. At present, there is no timeframe for the completion of this investigation, but I appreciate your raising these as examples of conditions which may have an elevated incidence among submariners due to their unique service environment.

So, we are left in the position now of ‘it might happen’ but if so ‘who knows when’. Cold comfort, but there is the prospect of a faint glimmer of hope at the end of a tunnel of indeterminate length.

Thank you very much to all who participated in the survey and submitted responses to the questionnaire. Of the 160+ submissions, over 95% reported having experienced sinus barotrauma while serving at sea as an Australian submariner. Furthermore, we had some very detailed inputs from former Chief Coxn’s providing information on how often they – as the RAN’s official ‘medical staff’ onboard – regularly encountered and treated sinus barotrauma and the lack of any individual medical records being generated of such treatments. None of this was apparently sufficient for DVA, who one can only conclude consider that an SM must be like a major warrie on a major deployment, with a Medical Officer embarked and a Sickbay full of medics on hand and tripping over themselves in their fervour to record every health and medical malady experienced by the crew members!

We’ll keep trying. Thanks, Polly and Ray.

Some silly “Skimmer” sent me this, bloody hero!!! When we wise people know that happiness is 400 feet in any roughers…JJJ JC

It is not often I put out correspondence like this, but believe it rates a mention.
Dear shipmates and friends of the RNA,

It is my sad duty to report I have just spoken to Shipmate Margaret Attwood (Bert’s Daughter-in-Law) and she informed me that that our esteemed Shipmate, Past Branch Chairman and All Round Bloody Great Oppo Albert (Bert) Attwood sailed on his final journey at approximately 0400 Sunday 7th June 2019, quietly whilst he was asleep, a patient of Box Hill Hospital.

Bert was one of our D Day Veterans, a recipient of the Frances Highest Order ‘The Legion of Honour’ - The Legion of Honour (French: Légion d'honneur, is the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and retained by all later French governments and regimes.
Bert served with distinction in the Royal Navy during the second World War as a member of the Fleet Air Arm, including seeing service on HMS Victorious, the aircraft carrier that launch the aircraft which detected and crippled the Battleship Bismark.

I visited Bert last Thursday; he was fully conscious and in full control of his faculties, he enjoyed reading his copy of Port Phillip Papers, and the sippers of the Lambs Navy Rum in a cup of coffee – That twinkle was still in his eye and he was ‘on form’ joking with me.

Per Bert’s wishes, and as confirmed by Margaret Attwood, there will not be a funeral. There will be a private cremation and Bert’s ashes will be later committed to eternity.
I have asked Margaret’s permission to include a tribute in a forthcoming copy of the Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper from the RNA, to which she agreed.

Farewell Bert, our dear friend and shipmate, may your final journey be on calm waters as you sail onto your final patrol.

COXSWAINS RANT
I am not one to touch too much on politics but the information received from John Polglaze through Ray Kemp really pissed me off. A lot of time and effort went into putting their submission together and to get it knocked on the head sends sparks from my arse. Surly this is an indictment ie, illustrates that the situation is bad (the DVA System still has a lot of work to do), given all the correspondence received regularly, is not entirely correct (DVA streamlining their system to make it easier) is a crock of shit!
As one who knows, seen some horrific occurrences in my 23 years on boats and have fought DVA (with the help of our own Ray Kemp) to achieve a positive result (2 and a half years down the track).
It is my opinion only, that Defence need to appoint a dedicated Liaison Officer who has direct contact with DVA and has access to the old NPEMS system along with PM Keys. That link could and would solve significant issues that frustrate many Veterans applying for Pensions. She/He can cross reference all archive data and forward to the Member/ex Member and be the one and only POC. Having said that and in a perfect world, it would expedite processes and would save our members going around in ever diminishing circles and still disappearing up our central orifice.

Finally
To end on a high

Shut and Clipped for this week
