Letter from REX FETTELL OAM, Sabre Designer - June 2019

Hello Sabre Sailors,

The following letter to the SSAA Committee was received from Rex Fettell OAM whom most of you know is the father and designer of the Sabre and Minnow dinghies. It is in response to the newsletter from SSAA President, Russell Rooney published late June. Great to hear from Rex who with wife Bev, is currently enjoying a caravan trip to far North Qld.

SSAA Committee - 2019 - 2020.
 Gentlemen,

Thank you for an inspiring email to Sabre sailors, a communication which is showing wise determination, positive initiative and a strong confidence in the ongoing future of the Sabre Class.

Forty-five years of Sabre sailing !!!!!

I never cease to be amazed at the strength of the class and its popularity among the Australian sailing fraternity.

I must confess to a feeling of personal pride coupled with a sense of deep humility as I look back over the past 45 years of Sabre growth and competition.

It is the commitment, the dedication, careful planning and hard work of so many State and National Committees which has promoted and governed so well, enabling the Sabre to enjoy a high regard in the local sailing world.

Over 45 years ago when the first 6 skippers at Carrum Sailing Club on Port Phillip Bay took the risk and built the first 6 boats, (yet to be called Sabre), we had ongoing meetings where we all pooled our ideas for possible growth of this boat, which we hoped would be a new and much needed single handed class in our Sailing Club.

Wisely, the “one design” concept was adopted and measurement fittings etc and sail emblem were determined.  We had our sailing club’s support,  the name Sabre was adopted and this first small group of enthusiasts who had a dream, became the first “Sabre Committee”

It is to this initial group of 6 and then to the ongoing 45 years of further State and National Committees to whom a multitude of past and present Sabre sailors would wish to express their thanks and appreciation for the ongoing planning and publicity which has maintained the high profile of the Sabre, as a serious competitive class.

To you, the newly elected small team of Sabre sailors from many states, who have volunteered to accept executive roles on the 2019/2020 SSAA Committee, we all thank you for giving your time and skills, and we know that you will make informed decisions wisely and that you continue to both sail and promote the Sabre - - - - - - a boat which we all enjoy so much.

Yours sincerely,

REX FETTELL.  OAM.
