LAST MEETING

President Joseph Geisinger brought the June 9 meeting to order at 1:18. He welcomed everyone to our inaugural meeting at the Skirball Cultural Center and called for reports. Secretary Michael Connor reported that the Club Facebook page now has 1,615 followers and the ACCLA website is receiving 200-300 visitors each day. He has set up an ACCLA Paypal account to add donation buttons to the website. Vice-President Roger Burry reviewed upcoming meeting programs. Randy Butler will talk on Who is on that Coin? at the July 14 meeting, Lori Hambly will talk on Maximinus at the August 11, 2019 meeting, and David Michaels will talk on Travelling Hadrian's Wall at the September 8, 2019 meeting.

Many members had attended the Long Beach Expo and visited the magnificent Tyrants of the Tiber exhibit. Mike Cozzolino mentioned that copies of the Tyrant catalogs can be read on line. View them at: http://thetyrantcollection.com/shop/.

President Geisinger presented a well-earned Certificate of Appreciation to Roy Iwata in acknowledgment of his having manned the Club table at the Long Beach Expo for yet another 3 day stint. The Club picked up 2 new members. Thank you so much, Roy!

The feature presentation was a group seminar on The Value of Provenance anchored by Roger Burry and Ken Friedman, with Joe Tooma putting in a cameo appearance as ACCLA’s auctioneer as we tried to assign dollar amounts to provenance. It was another excellent and well received program with lots of audience participation and contributions from members. Thank you Ken, Roger, and Joe!

NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT

  • The Roman Dictator Julius Caesar (ruled 49-44 BCE), with the expertise of astronomer and mathematician Sosigenes of Alexandria, instituted major reforms to improve the Roman calendar. Following his assassination in 44 BCE, the Senate renamed Quintilius, the fifth month of the original Roman year and the birth month of Julius Caesar, to "Iulius" in his honor.
