Welcome to this issue of First Friday Genealogy with Sassy Jane on research portals.

Archives, maps, newspapers, and books are just a few of the resources you can find in research portals.

My new e-book helps you find and use these portals. With direct links and search strategies in this Sassy Jane Genealogy Guide, you’ll find portals worldwide with digital records and primary sources for your genealogy research.

Hundreds of research portals exist beyond Ancestry, FamilySearch, and other prominent walled garden genealogy sites.

A research portal is a specially designed website that brings information from diverse sources together in a uniform way. Portals usually offer:

1. One search interface for many collections
2. Free access
3. Links to print and digital sources from around the world

Archives Portal Europe is the gateway to information on 275,000 archival collections in 7,070 European archives. The site also provides information on archival institutions throughout the continent. Similar to ArchiveGrid in the United States, the right search strategy can yield great results.
The Digital Library on American Slavery is a portal to “detailed personal information about slaves, slaveholders, and free people of color in all 15 slave states and Washington, D.C.” Hosted at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, DLAS is searchable with a single interface, including the Runaway Slave Advertisements database seen above.
State Historic Newspaper Projects offer vintage newspapers for your genealogy research. Newspapers for your area of research interest probably exist in several locations. Free state and federal sites offer digitized newspapers created with taxpayer funds. Other issues may have been digitized by commercial firms like newspapers.com or genealogybank.com. Learn how to find all the digitized newspapers for your family history research here
Need context for your Canadian research? The Canadian Encyclopedia offers 14,000 articles in multiple languages, searchable by people, places, and things. Published by Historica Canada of Toronto, subjects on this free site include history, popular culture, events, people, places, politics, arts, First Nations, sports, and science.

That's all for the July issue of First Friday Genealogy with Sassy JaneInterested in more portals for your research? Try Sassy Jane Genealogy e-books for more help.

Good luck with your research this month. See you on August 3 for next issue of my free genealogy newsletter.
