JUNE 2019
HOMELESSNESS

Homeless Resource Center

At the June 18 Board Meeting, Commissioner Weiss and the Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a plan to move forward with developing a second homeless resource center south of Lake Worth Road.

The new center will have 73 beds and is intended to help people who are struggling with homelessness, connecting them to services and finding permanent housing and jobs. It would be the second facility in the county in addition to the Phillip Lewis Center which opened in 2012 on 45th street in West Palm Beach.

Reducing homelessness is one of the Board’s strategic priorities, and according to the annual homeless count there was a slight increase over last year. The Homeless Resource Center is expected to cost $8 million and is slated to open in November 2022.
GRAND OPENING

Shark Wake Park

Commissioner Weiss attended the Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on Saturday, June 15th for Shark Wake Park. The new amenity is a public-private partnership between the Greg Norman Company, JR Wake Parks and Palm Beach County. The relationship and collaboration between JR Wake Parks and the Gold Medal winning Parks and Recreation Department has been fantastic.

In his comments, Commissioner Weiss told the attendees "This new facility covers about 20 acres and includes two full size wake rides. It includes the largest Inflatable Aqua Park Obstacle Course on the east coast of the United States with a 150 - person capacity."

Shark Wake Park is expected to host local, national and international competitions bringing new visitors to Palm Beach County and positively affecting our economy.

Future phases will include an Adventure Ropes Course and Zip lines for all ages. Okeeheelee Park is nearly 1,700 acres and truly serves as Palm Beach County’s central park.  Adventure type sports are on the rise, particularly with our youth and we are happy to have “Shark Wake Park” open in Okeeheelee Park which is in District 2.

CENSUS 2020

Multicultural Census Committee

Palm Beach County held its first Multicultural 2020 Census Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 25th. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together trusted voices of our multinational communities and to engage these leaders on the importance of the 2020 Census insuring everyone is counted on Census Day, April 1, 2020.

The meeting was very successful and well attended. Speakers included Palm Beach County Mayor Mack Bernard, County Administrator Verdenia C. Baker and Director of Public Afffairs Lisa De La Rionda. They all spoke about the importance of local participation and the economic impact that Federal money has in our county.

Commissioner Weiss, who headed the initiative, thanked everyone for being part of this Committee. Pedro Guilarte, from the U.S. Census Bureau spoke about the mechanics of the Census and answered questions from the attendees.

The leaders were from many organizations including education, business, community, government, faith-based and communications. They all participated and gave great ideas as what they can all do in their own areas to bring awareness and raise participation. A second meeting is planned for this October.
