1. Updates

Week 10

Hello Urbanists! This week, we have not one, not two, but three new articles published by Oxford Urbanists, all responding to this month's regional monthly topic of 'urban informality'. The articles will take you from informal settlements surrounding Chandigarh, India, to urban planning, to adaptation and social resilience in Colombia. Head over to the new Oxford Urbanists Monthly section of our website to get your fill and learn more.

Read on for news on why we should design cities for kids, opportunities to attend conferences and summer schools, events happening from Oxford to Singaporeand much much more.

In this month's regional articles... Dr Kanchan Gandhi examines the exclusionary politics affecting two informal settlements in Chandigarh, India. Andrés Melendro, in conversation with Andrés Linares, explores the interface of informality and urban planning. Meanwhile, Juan Sebastián Benítez Bustamante examines informal work in the context of Bogotá.
These are truly fantastic articles... why not have a read and bask in a self-satisfied feeling of urban knowledgeability for the rest of your day?

As always, please do send in your pictures and work -  we'd love to feature them in our newsletter. Head over to Facebook, Twitter, and our website pages for more updates.

2. Urbanist News around the World

  • Scaling: Designing cities for kids can change millions of lives (Apolitical)
    • A slightly more sensible article than I had been hoping for - but still interesting, despite the absence of mention of water slide transportation networks, etc.
  • A cyclist's guide to biking the city – a cartoon (The Guardian)
    • Some soothing drawings on cycling in the city. Geography students or those looking to save their money on expensive mindfulness adult colouring books can print and attack with a crayola.
  • 2040 transport Master Plan announced by Singapore (Eltis)
    • Always good when 'Master Plan' isn't accompanied by the prefix 'evil'
  • Kigali wins global Wellbeing City Award (The New Times)
    • The City of Kigali has been named Public Health Laureate for 2019 Wellbeing City Award, thanks to the city's bimonthly car-free day.
  • Death to Liveability! (CityLab)
    • What does it really mean when certain kinds of cities keep getting ranked as the world’s “most livable”?
