GA$ PRICE$
Gas tax strikes again with 5.6¢ hike:  California's nation-leading gas prices are on the rise this morning, as a 5.6 cent per-gallon increase in the gas tax has come into effect.

The increase is the second part of the Golden State's 2017 gas tax hike. The first increase was 12 cents per-gallon, implemented in November 2017.

The Big Stat: 47.3 cents. As of today, that's the total cost of California's gas tax on every gallon you pump at the service station.

Higher and higher: According to Senate Bill 1, the law that enacted the gas tax hike two years ago, the gas tax will be increased annually starting on July 1, 2020 according to California's Consumer Price Index.
HIGH CALIBER CRIME
Fresno artist-turned-arms dealer pleads guilty in illegal arms sales deal: Ara Dolarian, a Fresno native who ran a heavy-arms brokerage firm, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate Federal arms brokering laws in relation to an $8.5 million arms sale to Nigeria.

Dolarian was arrested in mid-May on charges of violating the Federal Arms Export Act, conspiracy, and money laundering. Federal authorities seized roughly $6 million of Dolarian's assets as part of their investigation into the sale.

By pleading guilty to the conspiracy charge, the Fresnan faces a potential five-year sentence and a $250,000 fine.
IT'S ALWAYS SONNY IN LOS BANOS

Ag Secretary Perdue hones in on trade issues during town hall: Flanked by four California Congressmen – Reps. Jim Costa (D-Fresno), TJ Cox (D-Fresno), Josh Harder (D-Turlock), and Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) – U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue received an earful on the state of American farmers in Los Banos on Friday.

In questioning Perdue, Blue Diamond Growers board member Kent Stenderup of Arvin went straight for brass tacks.

“The President said he would take care of us and help us. we supported the president and his motives,” Stenderup said. “But it’s worse than it was a year ago.

Perdue said that the Trump administration made great strides in its trade negotiations with China only to see the Chinese renege on its commitments that otherwise would have been "wonderful for agriculture."

Unanimous support, ambivalent realities on NAFTA replacement: Beyond trade wars with China, considerable focus was placed on the replacement for NAFTA. During the forum, all four Congressmen in attendance voiced unanimous support for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The real issue is whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi will bring the trade pact to the floor for a vote.

Turlock's Harder lamented the fact that the benefits USMCA provides for agriculture is being overshadowed by issues related to pharmaceuticals and environmental rules. Pelosi indicated last Thursday that she wanted "surgical" changes to the pact in relation to those issues.

FRESNO GRIZZLIES
Grizzlies pick up third-straight win: The Grizzlies were on fire this weekend, closing out a series in Las Vegas on Friday with a win and continuing into the weekend with back-to-back victories over the El Paso Chihuahuas. Sunday, Fresno picked up a 7-4 win as part of a five-game set in Texas.

The victory leaves the Grizzlies with a record of 43-40 and holding a half-game lead over the Sacramento RiverCats.

What's next: Game three with the Chihuahuas tonight in El Paso. First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
WHAT WE'RE WATCHING
Esmeralda Soria's burgeoning Congressional bid: Whispered-about for more than a month, the Fresno City Councilwoman appears to be more and more likely to challenge long-time Rep. Jim Costa (D-Fresno)

Thus far, sources report to The Sun that she's met with key political groups in Washington, D.C. and solicited Sacramento and Los Angeles-based political operatives.

Those operatives, in turn, picked up the domain "SoriaForCongress.com" on Friday

All the while, Soria has remained mum about the prospects of a challenge to the 14-year Congressman.
