Sofie Remijsen vice-director of ASH

Sofie Remijsen will work alongside Guy Geltner during his directorship of ASH. Sofie will be primarily responsible for handling any PhD-related affairs, such as the annual Training and Supervision plans of PhD candidates and their annual progress reports.

Sofie has been an assistant professor of Ancient History at the UvA since 2017. Earlier she worked at the universities of Mannheim and Leuven (PhD, 2012). She specializes in the culture and society of the Late Antique period Greek East of the Roman Empire, particularly athletics, calendars and (conceptions of) time in daily life, and has published The end of Greek athletics (2015) and Athletics in the Hellenistic World (co-editor, 2016).

Rosa de Jong granted NWO funding for PhD research

Rosa de Jong (ASH) has received funding for her doctoral research at the UvA through the NWO programme PhDs in the Humanities. Rosa's proposal:

From European harbours to a Caribbean home: war refugees in transit
In the Second World War, approximately three hundred, predominantly Jewish refugees reached the Caribbean via the Netherlands, arriving in multicultural countries under various colonial regimes. Historian Rosa de Jong studies how the interaction between government agencies and the refugees’ agency – their ability to act – influenced the course of their flight and their life afterward.

Rens Bod selected for International Francqui Chair UGent

Rens Bod, professor Digital Humanities and co-director of the Vossius Center, will hold the position from February till June 2021. The International Francqui Chair at the University of Ghent is for top level researchers who are very active in their professional field. Rend Bod is nominated by the Humanities faculties of Ghent and Antwerp for being an ‘oumo universalis of the 21th century’. Read more (in Dutch)

Educations Awards for Justyna Wubs-Mrozewicz and Kristine Johanson

Two ASH researchers have won awards at the ceremony of the Humanities Education Award. Justyna Wubs-Mrozewicz's 'Zorgen voor het zelf' is named best Master’s course and the audience award is won by Kristine Johanson's 'Shakespeare, Sexuality, and Adaptation'. Toni Pape's (ASCA) course 'Games' was named best Bachelor's course. Read more

EHRI Conference: Holocaust Studies and its Social Setting

Holocaust Studies is a dynamic multidisciplinary research field that is dedicated to the Holocaust itself but also includes aspects of the post-Holocaust world such as memory, human rights, Jewish life or international relations. At the same time, the research field has a manifest public dimension. To examine these diverse and intertwined dimensions, EHRI and its partner institution NIOD, Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, organise two conferences in July 2019. Read more

Macro vs. Micro: The Challenges of Global Intellectual History

Keynote lectures by Prof. dr. Dominic Sachsenmaier (Georg-August University Göttingen) and Prof. dr. Andrew Fitzmaurice (University of Sydney). The lectures are part of the Summer School organised with by Huizinga Institute for Cultural History with the Seminar Global Intellectual History.

Thinking like a database

The workshop “Thinking like a database” offers insights into the opportunities and challenges of digitally gathering and storing of information, and on modelling and structuring our materials and at a conceptual level. Using an online multimedia database (LAB 1100’s nodegoat technology), we discuss and try out the complexities of organizing and manging your materials in structured datasets. This also allows you to create relational modes of analysis, mapping the geographic, social and temporal connections between your materials and data.

The next round of Mandel postdoctoral fellowships is open at the Mandel Scholion Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for applicants in any field of Humanities or Jewish Studies. Deadline is 15 September. Read more

2 PhD positions "Transnational Business History" (Univ. Maastricht)

In cooperation with the Centre for the Social History of Limburg (SHCL) and the Centre for the Regional History of Limburg (RHCL), the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers two PhD positions in transnational business history. Transnational business history should be understood in a broad sense, including social, economic, political, cultural and environmental aspects. The IEG in Mainz awards fellowships for international doctoral students in European history, the history of religion, historical theology, and other historical disciplines. The IEG has two deadlines each year for the IEG Fellowships: February 15 and August 15. The next deadline is August 15, 2019. Read more

Call for applications | PhD Finishing Fellowships

The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for 0.5 FTE PhD Finishing Fellowships, tenable from January 1, 2020. Each fellowship will be for a period of up to 12 months. The award holder is required to deliver a completed dissertation (defined as "dissertation submitted to the examination committee") by the end of the fellowship period. Deadline is 1 October.
