Sign up for the AMS Mentorship Program!

The AMS MT is currently attempting to establish an AMS Mentorship Program for PhD candidates and Early Career Researchers (post-docs). The idea is to provide every researcher at AMS with the opportunity to get guidance and mentorship from a more senior member who is not directly affiliated with their project. The mentor provides guidance that is different to that given by the supervisor on issues such as career guidance, stress and time management, work/life balance, setting priorities, networking and visibility, funding opportunities, etc. For the mentor, this is an opportunity to get acquainted with issues that are most likely also affecting their own researchers and to get in contact with talented individuals outside their close network.

We are also collecting ideas from existing, external mentorship programs, but believe that offering the program within AMS will bring like-minded researchers together and help strengthen the internal structure of the institute.

While the details of the program are yet to be established, the current plan is:

  • Mentors include professors, senior researchers, early career researchers, other academic staff and 4th year PhD candidates.
  • Mentees include PhDs and early career researchers.Interested mentors and mentees sign up for the program and follow a short course (probably online) explaining the program, their role and the expectations as mentee or mentorAfter completing the course, mentees and mentors are matched based on their affiliations, career stage and interests.
  • Mentee initiates the first contact with the mentor and provides a clear set of questions to the mentor that he/she would like to discuss during a face to face meeting.
  • Mentee and mentor meet and establish a personal work plan (e.g. 4-5 meetings spread over 10 months, or meetings as required)

Please let us know whether you are interested in the program with the following information:

  • Career stage: PhD (which year?) / Early Career Researcher (post-doc) / senior researchers / academic staff / professor?
  • Would you like to serve as mentee / mentor / both mentee and mentor
  • Divisions(s): VUmc / AMC / VU / FGB / ACTA / HvA?

Any comments or ideas on the program are welcome!

ZonMw grant for Marike van der Schaaf
ZonMw has awarded a grant of 37.500 to Marike van der Schaaf (AMC) and her team for the treatment of people with Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). The grant gives them the opportunity to draw up an action plan for setting up a sustainable transmural professional network that provides optimal care for people with PICS.  A majority of critically ill patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit develop long term restrictions in daily functioning and participation problems. There is a gap in healthcare in this respect.  Read more
Jennifer Kerkman Wins Best Poster Award at ISINP
At the second International Summer Institute on Network Physiology (ISINP) at Lake Como in Italy from 29 July till August 2, Jennifer Kerkman presented her poster entitled Dynamic connectivity in the musculosketelal system reveals changes in motor control between different modes of coordination during walking. This small and informal meeting brings physicists, mathematicians and clinicians together to share their ideas about the use of network analysis in understanding the functioning of the human body. This research is realized in cooperation with Annike Bekius, Tjeerd Boonstra, Andreas Daffertshofer and Nadia Dominici and centers on how muscle synergies reflect how coordinated movements are manifested via muscle activities. However, little is known about the way in which synergies are established. Muscle networks can unravel modular structures in the neuromuscular system which may modulate muscle activity to account for changes in interlimb coordination during walking. During the AMS Annual Meeting in March, Jennifer also received the Amsterdam Movement Sciences Outstanding Paper Award 2019.
ICEE Congress Great Success
The 2019 International Conference Environmental Ergonomics was a great success. The yearly conference was held at KIT Tropeninstituut Amsterdam this year and was attended by 300 participants from various countries such as the UK, USA, Japan, Korea and Australia. In total 103 proposals were judged by 56 independent jury members. PhD candidate Movement Sciences VU-FGB, Lisa Klous was awarded the first prize for the best oral presentation, and Puck Alkemade, also VU FGB,  won the shared 2nd/3rd best poster award. Hein Daanen, professor in environmental excercise physiology at FGB, VU, handed out the awards. For more information: ICEE website
I’M FINE Newsletter
Above, you can find the first issue of the I'm Fine Newsletter that appeared in July. The I'm Fine study aims to improve  the condition of people with a muscular disease. The newsletter was sent to all involved and participants in the study. If you know of interested parties who would like to receive the newsletter, please send an email to Sander Oorschot, Amsterdam UMC.

Amsterdam Science & Innovation Awards
The Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award (AmsiA) is a prestigious entrepreneurial award, which is linked to an educational program for selected participants. It is an annual tournament for researchers from all the Amsterdam knowledge institutes, organized by AMSIA. The aim of this award is to encourage researchers and students to think about the concrete social and commercial applications of their research or idea and to disseminate the knowledge and innovations of the institutions. Participating in the award means not only professional guidance from the IXA team, but also the opportunity for students and researchers to further develop their idea, to investigate its impact and to bring their innovation to the attention of the public.
If you know researchers or students who could compete for the prize, encourage them to apply to IXA via the application form. Sign up deadline: September 9, 2019. The Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award is organized by IXA (the valorization agency of Amsterdam UMC, VU, UvA and HvA). If you have any questions about this award, please contact Caroline Kleine Staarman (tel: 020-598 6916). The festive award ceremony will take place on November 26, 2019.

News for ECRs (Early Career Researchers)

Grant Application Course
PhDs and postdocs who want to pursue an academic career might want to follow the Grant Application Course at the Science Park in Amsterdam. Here PhDs and postdocs can enhance their academic career prospects by improving their grant writing skills. Since the success of their academic career in nearly every stage is highly dependent on their success in applying for grants, grant writing is an essential skill to learn for aspiring academics. Scientists are often extensively trained in writing scientific articles, however there are substantial differences between writing articles and writing grant applications. The course will take place January 16-17, 2020. Click here for more information. Note: Always consult with your supervisor before making a financial commitment!
